ST:TMP: Was such a massive refit of the USS Enterprise logical?

I’m not 100% convinced this is was something done by Okuda. Two blatantly egregious registry errors. I don’t think he was ever that sloppy, even at the beginning of his tenure, regardless if it was supposed to be seen too closely or not.

You can always ask him, but the surrounding nonsense numerals (frequent on illegible displays) are pretty much Okuda’s trademark. Either the display is supposed to be legible and you just do it right, or it’s not and you can take a few shortcuts with the layout such as truncating registry numbers.

From Memory Alpha:

The panels were not clearly visible on screen in any scene of the final release. These two panels show NX-2000 and the NCC-1707 departure routes from the Spacedock. One of the panels abbreviated the registries to NX-200 and NC-177. It was possible these graphics were created to correspond with dialogue from a deleted scene found in the shooting script for the two dock controllers: "Excelsior and Intrepid are cleared to depart. Open spacedock doors" followed by the failure of both ships to power up and the doors to open, due to influence by the Whale Probe.
