ST:TMP BluRay

I don't know about the knit pickers out there, but these shots are fabulous looking compared to everything I've seen from TMP.

It's hard to get where you're coming from, since TMP, with the exception of some terrible matte lines, has got the most stupendous ship photography of any of the movies (though some of FX is pretty good.) Then again, I saw this thing a lot of times in the theater and I am probably a nitpicker.

Well, the VHS copies were pretty bad...

I'm not sure I agree that TMP was such an innovative approach shoot re the VFX. A lot of what was done for it were advancements of things Trumbull had done on CE3K. I think they were evolutionary rather then revolutionary advancements.

A big part of the difference in looks between it and TWOK were because Trumbull's shop was set up to shoot effects one way (hi-con mattes instead of blue screens, for instance) and ILM's to do it a different way. The Enterprise pearlescent paint job works better in hi-con photography than the way ILM did blue-screens (albeit there were ways ILM could have gotten around this, but I'm sure cost/budget affected their choices).

Cloud tanks look hokey now...not so much to cinema-goers in 1982.

My biggest problem with ILM's work in TWOK is their matte density. You can see stars through parts of the ships at some points, etc. I know they didn't always print elements at 100% to make them not look so "cut out", but the results are a little transparent.

.

If they'd had more time, I think it would have been a lot more imaginative looking ... lots of intended innovations (on Abel/Taylor as well as Trumbull) went by the wayside. Trumbull wanted to do vger's exterior as a laser scan thing, which could have been phenomenal, topping even his cloud stuff. If he had gotten to build a 25 ft E, the drydock scene alone would have been the most miraculous looking stuff of the decade.

But the COMPSY cloud stuff was pretty cutting-edge, and the shiny objects in space aspect was way ahead of its time, considering ILM didn't really get a handle on that for another decade.

Elton -

Have you watched any of the other films on Blu-Ray? I'm especially interested in hearing about Star Trek IV (some say too much DNR), Star Trek V (I read on one forum the God stuff is totally blown out rendering the scene almost unwatchable), and Star Trek VI (DNR again).

Thanks for the TMP screencaps!

I may be viewing the others in the near future. I'm not as bothered about them as I am about TMP.

Holy crap, those pictures look good - but I'm perfectly happy with my DVDs. What's next, the Holodeck version? Where does it end???

Actually you are somewhat correct. Here is an article in Popular Science on the "Holo-Disc", which holds 20 Blu-Ray discs or 100 DVDs worth of data, which is 500 Gigabytes of information. They say this new disc will store data upto 50 to 100 years as opposed to CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs which break down after about 10 years. Unfortunately, this new disc won't be available until 2012.

My fault, the video corrupted slightly during that grab.

Here is a slightly earlier shot of the E without so much flare, matching trevenian's.

This was always one of the weaker shots, but, boy, does it look bad now.

Anyway, I'm getting that BRD :)

I knew it couldn't last; you're back to your usual form with that one.

BTW, It was just SO so bad they used it on the ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT opening for years.

Honestly, why are you trying to pick a fight even when we agree?

You forget an emoticon there? For the bystanders: we are not in agreement on this.

Hell if I know.

Someone with a decent sense of what's good should listen and tell.

Well, that'd be just about anyone really unless we have deaf members. What we really need I guess is a comparison to the old mix since the Director's Edition adds new sound effects.

I guess I misread your post.

Still that shot looks bad, IMO. The Earth looks like a blue blob of goo and the lighting on the Enterprise is off - the key-light is coming from the side when it should come from behind. And then there is the motion, I know slowing down the camera when you get closer to your model (miniature or CG) is conveying mass, but bringing it to a complete stop isn't helping an at this point already dragging movie.

I'd still like to see the SLV cleaned up and put on DVD or BlueRay (I don't have such a player.........yet.) I have it on VHS (what's that?) but the picture quality is worse then I remember it. I've been spoiled by DVD.

He re-constructed the SLV in widescreen, minus one reaction shot of Chapel that he couldn't find, and released it, but then some people pointed out a few edit goofs that slipped past. He's currently fixing them and will be re-releasing it soon.

Break down after ten years? Balderdash. I have cd's purchased in 1990 that play just fine. Just keep dirt, moisture and fingerprints off of them and they'll be fine.

I just found that the other day. Can't wait till it is done.

Just started to listen to the commentary by the guys who did the DE from StarTrek.com and they explain why they made the sound mix change and line cuts they did. I don't agree with anything of their reasonings and especially think the new effects make the movie to campy now.

Yes, there are versions of 'The Phantom Manace' and 'Attack of the Clones' out there that are resembling watchable movies...
