ST:TMP BluRay

This is again something that might just be as it was in a theatre in '79, but bridge announcements from Scotty (Sir, we need further simulation on the flow sensors) and Sulu (Warp 5... warp 6... heard over intercom in Engineering) seem to have a nice audio echo added to them, similar to Picard's "Medical team to the bridge" line in NEM.

I'd still like to see the SLV cleaned up and put on DVD or BlueRay (I don't have such a player.........yet.) I have it on VHS (what's that?) but the picture quality is worse then I remember it. I've been spoiled by DVD.

Holy shoot!
(Charges up phaser and zaps computer to make sure it's not a fake hologram)
(New computer later)
Wow. That settles it than. Better than brandy, better than tums. Watch out fuel cells, here she comes! BLURAY!

The images are tons better, but they are also kinda off in some way. I looked at them last night and again this morning, and I'm wondering if they applied that grain erasure algorithm to TMP, like they did to PATTON. It seems like there is some texture missing from the image, which has been described as eliminating detail at one level, while accentuating detail in others.

Reason I say this is that photographic frame blowups from TMP didn't look this bright and sharp on the edges, and they should have.

I'm really intrigued, as I'm sure they didn't actually do any hands-on work to the film this early in its bluray history.

I've been reading some fan reviews on other fora, and that's what folks are saying. The DNR and EE, to them, seems obvious, and has removed detail, leaving a waxy look. So, we can live w/ our DVDs (which I've already sold off), or live w/ BDs that are better than DVD, but not as good as they could be.

I'm reserving judgment until I receive my set.

I've read that, too. I've actually read a few different opinions. Some saying EE/DNR on only some movies (TMP and TUC seem to be the culprits, some say TVH and TUC, etc.), some saying it affects all the films, etc. I will be holding onto my DVDs until I see the Blu-Rays myself. And even then, I'll still hold on to TMP, TWOK, and TUC (for the different versions).

elton, I forgot to thank you for the wonderful screenshots. They're making me really eager to get the set.

Cheers,
Doug

I'd guess TVH will be least affected in terms of the live-action, because it is already so soft from all the smoked interiors.

I'm kinda at the crossroads here ... I was only going to go bluray when we got another TV, which was going to be 46" minimum, preferably plasma, though recent events seem to have made that option a scarce one. But the noise reduction thing is supposedly only really noticeable on sets about that size and larger (at least the good ones that size), so I'd hate to do my 'final' upgrade and then be pissing&moaning about all this stuff.

I've already had a lot of issues with the blur reduction on action that I've seen while evaluating various HD sets, which tends to make fun fights look too PVT RYAN for my taste (for me, a lot of the art in cinema is in the blur, so I'm guessing James Cameron's new approach to cinema is not going to be my cup of tea either.)

Maybe what I will do is buy TMP and 2001 on BLURAY and then go around to stores to find a TV on which they both look really good (or better than the standard dvds anyway ... that'll at least give me a ground level to base a purchase on.)

Should I be ashamed that I had no idea TMP was going to be on BluRay? Compared to how fucking terrible the DVD looks, I have no qualms about purchasing this for BD off the bat (along with the TOS ones, as my first two BDs)

How is the sound elton?

EDIT: My god, this is the year of Star Trek, for almost everybody. The hard core guys get goregous BD sets for TOS (with both versions) and TMP, and everyone else gets a new movie...and the "old timer" stuff too. :p

Now if they'd just release the soundtrack for Elaan of Troyius I could die happy.

Not to belabor this, but comparing this screencap with the similar one on trekcore, the deflector dish is oddly colorless in the new version, neither yellow (as it always was) or blue (which is how it is at highpower.)

I see very little difference in the actual shade of color. If anything the vibrancy and contrast of the new version is even more apparent. (image from Trekcore)

Maybe it is because I'm colorblind, but when I compare the two, one is yellow (trekcore) and the other is practically the same color as the hull.

The BD shot.

Not really the best comparison shots, mainly because the sun hasn't fully flared in the Trekcore cap. We'd need a shot a few seconds later for proper comparison.

In any case, I'm seeing there's a contrast difference between the two, with the older shot being on the darker side of the spectrum and the BD version having a greater range. The deflectors share the same yellow twinge, but the DVD shot is darker to begin with, so it stands out more.

The midtones are brighter on the BluRay cap, that's for sure. But I'd say the saturation of the color is about the same.

trevnian, when you say "colorblind," are you making a wisecrack or do you literally mean red-green colorblind? Because if the latter, I can see how the different grayscale values between the images might be throwing off your sense of what color it is.

If not, just ignore me. :p

Nope, he's colorblind.

It's strange though. He's still incredibly perceptive to cinematography and picture, even without a color distinction.

The problem is, the SLV doesn't just need cleanup; it would need effects work. The boat for that happening sailed with the Director's Edition.
