ST:SNW S03 - Official Trailer

I love Ortegas and the glimpses into her character we got so far. I’m still holding out hope that one day before they wrap up the show we will get an episode / story focussing more heavily on her. Maybe we will be surprised, but from what we’ve seen and heard so far of season three doesn’t lead me to believe we will get such an episode this time around. Come to think of it, it’s unfortunate that it seems like we will get an episode prominently featuring her brother before we get one that’s just about her. But who knows how that one will play out …

I will say, one unintended side effect of Ortegas not getting center stage so far is that as an actress it gives Melissa Navia the opportunity to fill in some of those blanks with how she plays her; her mannerisms, facial expressions etc. The writers apparently didn’t give her some elaborate backstory like most of the other character seem to have to play off of, so the way she plays her is almost everything we have to go off of. And we as viewers get to fill some of those blanks as well while watching her:

In my mind Ortegas is someone who despite her young age has seen some tough shit. Her jovial behavior often seems like a facade to hide some of those darker thoughts and instincts that might drive her. She feels like someone who makes friends easily, but who’d have a hard time really letting someone get close emotionally. Maybe it’s also the fact that I know something about the tragedies Melissa Navia had to experience in her private live, but I sense in Ortegas someone who maybe hides a lot of pain, glossing over it with a tough no-nonsense exterior and flippant quips.

It's cool that people like the Ortegas character, even as undeveloped as she is. Melissa Navia was on the Star Trek cruise, and it's clear that she's far more capable of doing better things than the little they're giving her to do on that show, just like Anthony Montgomery was far more capable than what they gave him on ENT. The problem is that it's also clear that Ortegas is the most expendable character on the ship, and if they start looking for people to kill off, I can see them doing that with her.

I'm wondering if at some point before it's all over if we'll get introduced to the other Mitchell.

I hope so. Dehner said he and Spock served together for years. They went out of their way to hew to one line in The Menagerie, so hopefully WNMHGB gets the same respect.

I wanna be clear that I like Ortegas, and I think Navia clearly has the chops to carry an episode.

Fact remains, they've given her precious little other than "I'm Ortegas, and I fly the ship!" Which is notable, considering every single other member of the main cast has been given at least an episode. Hell, some non-main cast members, like Kirk and T'Pring, have been given more development.

The concept of Starfleet hotshot pilots predate new Trek's Ortegas and Detmer. We were told that Riker was a hotshot pilot and that became a HUGE plot point when apparently he was literally the only person on the ship that Jellico could turn to to guarantee the success of mining the Cardassian fleet (never mind that Riker's been First Officer for 6 years at this point and a ship with the prominence of the Enterprise probably has other pilots with more recent experience aboard--I guess Riker spent a lot of holodeck time playing spaceflight sims). I don't recall it coming up again in regards to Riker other than that one time he used a joystick to steer the ship in Insurrection

Main characters are always more capable than actual trained personnel. But, then Picard was sent on a black operations mission to investigate Cardassians which strikes me as strange.

Nechayev: Picard's the only officer with theta band knowledge, let's send him on this mission to destroy the metagenic weapon.

Jellico: Too risky, let's send a lower ranking Vulcan, who's stronger than a human, to do it after he mind melds the theta band knowledge from Picard. I suggest Tuvok.

(later)

Madred: Vulcan, how many lights do you see?

Tuvok: Four.

(zaps Tuvok)

Tuvok: The amount of times you torture me cannot change the number of lights. To believe so is illogical. Furthermore, I am a Vulcan, I cannot lie.

(Madred zaps Tuvok continuously until he dies)
