ST:SNW S03 - Official Trailer

I wanna be clear that I like Ortegas, and I think Navia clearly has the chops to carry an episode.

Fact remains, they've given her precious little other than "I'm Ortegas, and I fly the ship!" Which is notable, considering every single other member of the main cast has been given at least an episode. Hell, some non-main cast members, like Kirk and T'Pring, have been given more development.
Yeah, Ortegas seems to be the "Travis & Mayweather" of SNW.

I think it's less of an issue of her as an actress - more that the powers-that-be don't really have a grasp what to do with her character.

In an old Trek series, we probably would have already gotten a crashed-shuttlecraft episode or space anomalies or some other generic plotline filler episode focused on her. With just 10 episodes, the writers have to pick their stories - and they seem to just have way more fun with a Spock-Chapelle love tri-angle, or hanging around with the legendary Kirk.

I hope they find a good idea what to do with her. The character & actress definitely deserve it.

She's head and shoulders above Mayweather in performance and writing, Shines brightly in every scene, while Mayweather at best had a dull glow.
Fully agree. But that's primarily down to the actress herself & her look.
On paper her backstory is even a lot thinner. There is just not more there other than "pilot".
Which is a shame.
For me the writers haven't yet really found a clear definition of her character & what to do with it.

As much as I love Anthony Montgomery — who was such a joy to meet and chat with a few years ago at a convention — I don’t think his acting chops are anywhere near Melissa Navia’s. Would have been interesting to see him rise to the occasion if they had written him a meatier part from time to time on Enterprise. But what we got was mostly unmemorable. Actually meeting him and experiencing him on stage he seemed like someone with a genuinely wonderful comedic talent; so maybe his skills were wasted on the milquetoast kind of character they created in Travis. Either way, Navia has much better range as a performer and I hope to see writers tap into that at some point before the show ends in … ugh … 26 episodes.

The writing is better for her. Some great dialog.
She seems more complex than Mayweather, The hints we've seen of her background as a wartime pilot indicate there's more than a quippy helmsman at play.

SNW is just a few notches better at regular dialogue than ENT all around.
I don't like Paul Wesley's version of Kirk at all. But whenever he opens his mouth, the sentences themselves sound pretty Kirk-like.

Everytime Ortega opens her mouth, I like her. The sentences sound natural, and the delivery has charm and character.
But if you had to analyse her character, or her backstory, I would completely blank out at the moment. The writers have to reinvent or find something for her.

SNW also already had completely overhauled some characters before - Dr M'Benga's dark secret in season 1 was hiding his daughter. His dark secret in season 2 is war-related. The only constant - the writers see him as a morally darker, secretive doctor, with strong emotional bonds, and that works.

For Ortega, the writers just have to give the character itself some meat, urgently. At the moment, despite being very sympathetic, she's still somewhat of a blank character sheet.

Also look at the red beams hitting the doorway(?). Could that be what the Farragut and Enterprise are firing at in this shot?

I think so. It would also seem that afterwards,...
something goes wrong and the planet explodes. The presumed Farragut takes heavy damage.

Except unlike Travis, her character SPEAKS during plenty of episodes.

Hahaha, I still remember when Mayweather finally got his big spotlight episode ("Dead stop"), and he spent the majority of his own episode dead on the morgue :rommie:

(Or when the big reveal of Travis' character episode was "he likes cake")

Maybe my memory’s way off, but I don’t remember “Dead Stop” to be a “big spotlight episode” for Travis in any way, shape or form. Not in the way it played out or was intended. If anything it’s an Archer, Trip and Reed episode. Sure you’re not confusing it with “Horizon” or “Fortunate Son”? He mentions liking strawberry shortcake in “Horzion”, but I doubt anyone considered that a “big reveal”. Then there’s that B-plot in “Silent Enermy” where Hoshi tries to find out Malcolm’s favorite food or something (it’s maybe pineapple), so maybe you got those confused?

We are going on the 3rd season here. Hints aren't enough anymore. It's time for the writers to give her character meaningful screen time and a story arc. It looks like we might get thst this season.

the Enterprise appears to be ramming the Gorn mothership in the trailer. Might explain some of the minor CG model changes in other shots. The ship doesn't have them in the ramming scene. So they're part of the repairs.
