(The opening might trigger certain people. Keep in mind it's not me saying this, and reach out to them if you wanna tell them to stop saying things) ;) :p

Looks like a ship. I still like the design.

It’s a shame we never saw that ship in the show. Another missed opportunity

So it’s the fifth ship to bear the name, but its class name is the same as the ship’s name? That’s lame. Does no one have an imagination anymore?

I might have gone for Galaxy Conqueror- or Conquistador-class to underscore the evilness.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Why the hell isn’t STO paying us?

Lack of imagination seems to be a theme of the Confederation of Earth, yes?

Maybe. I dunno. I didn’t see enough of it to make that judgement.

You realise of course that a first ship of a given class can also have that for its actual name in the Prime Timeline too.
The naming isn't intricately connected to anything... and it could be the Confederation simply decided to name that vessel the same thing (its possible it was named something else originally and was renamed?).

Honestly, that just looks like a modified Obena class from Lower Decks.
From my perspective, the Obena is easily a late 24th century refit of the original Excelsior class, which then got another upgrade in early 25th century turning it into Excelsior II.

I was referring to this ship specifically, and how STO had a complete lack of imagination when it came to giving the ship a class name, when its counterpart the Enterprise-D wasn’t ‘Enterprise class.’

Or maybe the problem isn’t their imaginations. Maybe CBS/Paramount doesn’t want to give them that kind of authority to come up with their own original names. Who knows. It’s still lame.

I think it probably has to do with balancing recognizability and distinctiveness. The DSC future-ships that still have the class-names of their spiritual ancestors have unique names in STO (the future-Constitution is the Kirk-class, the future-Intrepid Janeway-class), even if that's technically a contradiction to canon, but it makes them easier to tell apart (especially considering the game already has three different ships named "Constitution-class"). This would be the opposite class; if you want the World Razer from PIC, you're going to look for that, and not just have it filed away under Atrocity-class or whatever for verisimilitude.

At least call it the Excelsior-class Mk.2 to indicate a major revision.

Well, we only saw a little bit of the Confederation timeline anyway, so I guess there was no point in creating detailed backgrounds.

That doesn’t really matter to STO, since all they’re doing is adding the ship to their game.

Perhaps the point is that the Confederation IS a bit unimaginative when it comes to names, whilst the Federation isn't?

The point being the future of Trek has more words that inspire exploration, inquisitiveness, courage or honour than ways of wrecking your enemies.

The Confederation is run by humans versus the Federation which is multicultural?
