Spoilers ST Lower Decks - Starships and Technology Season Two Discussion

I think the "Klingons stole warp from humans" bit came from one of the RPGs - I think it was in the Last Unicorn TOS book or some of the side material, but that borrowed a lot from old FASA Trek.

New Cerritos MSD from today's episode (Made by Mike Okuda I believe), only good shots of it, hopefully more in a later episode.

Wow! I think that's at least the same level of guest spot as Jeff Coombs in this episode! Check out the clearly-an-Okuda-thing development badges for the California class on the bottom!

2X07 introduces a number of things, but oddly it's that new-ish Runabout that's going to need a lot of scrutiny. It looks MOSTLY like a Danube on the outside, all the way down to the nifty Stafleet pennant on the ventral cockpit. There seems to be some kind of module on top though, which the Danubes only really had on DS9 to tell them apart from each other, and which effectively disappeared when the show got the Defiant (and a CG Danube model) by the show's fifth season or so.

inside the runabout is seen the familiar layout up front, but aft of that is where things get a little fun. there are a couple benches on one side of what may be a familiar transporter booth. There's also a window above where Boimler and Mariner are sitting opposite the computer bench, which sorta matches the one above the cockpit's side windows. All told, it's POSSIBLE that all of this is really a classic Danube-class ship, modernized a bit inside and out.

The MSD is also pretty ground-breaking in that it displays four orthographic views of the ship simultaneously, where most of them we've seen are only from the side OR top, but not both. I'm counting the various "pool table" displays we've seen over the years, like in the Enterprise-D engineering of the NX-01 bridge.

I'd love to see a full-res version of this! Until then, I can only imagine that the dorsal thingies are labelled as "PHOTON TORPEDO LAUNCHER" and not just three fuzzy words!

It does look as if the MSD comes with fully legible text (for those able to focus on something else besides the obvious), while all the previous ones in LDS have clearly had just a string of dots and racetrack shapes imitating words.

The engineering pod shuttlebay at least is very clearly there. No dragons of note, alas.

Glad to see Okuda is still doing stuff for the franchise. I'm dying to know if anything treknologically interesting could be gleaned from that MSD, if only we could get a better look...

I find it odd they debut the new MSD in the same episode the old, inaccurate MSD appears prominently in engineering.

The one they show in Engineering has legible text now

Though one of the artists says to ignore it, it isn't completely accurate, the new one in Billups's room is the 'real deal'.

- AGIMUS' murder drones look oddly like the ones used by the OTHER evil computer system that wiped out the weapons dealers of Minos in "The Arsenal of Freedom". Coincidence?

- Let's not forget that the Monaveen has an MSD too, which is done pretty much to Starfleet spec of the era. Hysperia isn't necessarily a Federation member, so this could be some straightforward technology transfer. As it stands the ship has a familiar saucer/hull plus two nacelles arrangement common to most Alpha Quadrant powers.

- Nicely though, BIllups and Rutherford move directly from the Monaveen's bridge to the engineering room; and the MSD does seem to support this.

- And the Monaveen being disabled was apparently leaving Hysperia defenseless? I guess they couldn't afford more than one dragon ship, so they put all their eggs in one giant dragon basket...

- We confirm that the Cerritos' hull is three decks thick again, and even that it has a familiar starboard side docking hatch, but nothing fancy about it.

- In the larger "MAP" MSD in Engineering, the map mistakenly labels the big dorsal saucer cutout as the "captain's ready room", and the area aft of it is the landing bay. Apparently elsewhere it's been noted by the art guys that this wasn't intentional but was not well researched.

- I mentioned it in the "Picard" tech topic, but it bears repeating that I've been to Okinawa and the place doesn't really have cliffs like that. I'm guessing that it must be either built up after some natural or artificial change between now and the 2380+ time frame. Also, Okinawa is not particularly known for its ramen. Udon, on the other hand...

- So the Cerritos has internal security cameras and records... EVERYTHING, including innocuous records of conversations between Mariner and Ransom? Or maybe it was just what was on Mariner's PADD that AGIMUS accessed? Or AGIMUS just made that up based on a record it accessed?

- As concerning as it is that there are dozens of evil computers that Starfleet ALONE has managed to defeat / capture / retrieve for study in Okinawa, it's even MORE strange how they're all about the same size and shape as most 21st century desktop gaming rigs.

The Head of the Nation basically is stuck in space, not able to get home, ergo not able to be at home to direct her people in times of emergency / crisis should it occur.

Closer to the shape of a old school Apple Macintosh.

The Monaveen is their fleet flagship, probably. We don't know what other holdings Hysperia has or how much of a space service they have to protect said holdings.

Yeah, Brad Winters has said on twitter to basically ignore the Cerritos MSD's that aren't the one Billups's quarters this episode. They're inaccurate.

So hopefully we get more of that one in later episodes.

The Queen claimed that whatever mysterious ailment was affecting the Monaveen's engine was also giving other ships in the fleet trouble. However, it's strongly suggested that the problem on the Monaveen was created deliberately to get Billups there so it's likely that there was never anything wrong with any of the other ships in the Fleet.
