Spring Anime 2010

I sorta like to see it as kind of a satire, since to me they've got a serious situation which obviously is not taken too seriously, and it has some subtle references to other shows. At any rate, it's weird and different enough to me fresh.

Yeah, I agree about the humour. Though, of course, with anime you can never be sure that all the jokes aren't going to disappear half way through the show in a cloud of doom and despair while the characters you've come to root for are dragged through hell leaving you praying for their mere survival in the last few episodes. (I'm still sore about the first anime I watched.)

With those kinds of series I believe it's then up to the characters to be the anchor that keeps you coming back. Book of Bantora did not hook me, though I still finished it, and I attribute that to being the reason. Most everyone was just 1 dimensional or uninteresting.

Yeah, you're right about the characters, though I liked Hamy. Thought she was pretty interesting and she kept me wondering throughout the show whether she would settle on the evil psycho side or eventually redeem herself at the end. Also her character design was really striking I thought.

Also, Giant Killing with the funny English. There must be random English teachers they can pull off the street to do these lines!

Yeah, that was good. It was actually pretty well done though compared to some examples. heh

Maybe it's just me but I would rather daisuki be translated as I really like you instead of I love you in certain cases.

Oh I certainly agree that "like you" is appropriate in many cases. It's just occasionally it seems a bit off and sometimes, such as the example I mentioned, it is very definitely wrong; that, without doubt, was a declaration of love, and it just ruins the mood if the guy is passionately declaring that he "likes" the girl.

So hey guys, what are the good animes so far or the ones you're waiting to be subbed? I've only seen the 1st ep of the baseball anime Oofuri S2 - man I've really forgotten all the characters and what happened in the 1st season so it was pretty hard to follow. What do you recommend I watch next?

I think everyone here agrees that B Gatta H Kei is good. I thought Arawaka Under the Bridge was hilarious and looks set to be the best comedy this season. If you like football, or soccer if you prefer, then Giant Killing is a must. Working seems ok. I'll be checking out Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei later this month, and maybe House of Five Leaves. On Angel Beats I tend to agree with firehawk12. Liked it so far but not sure it'll turn out all that well in the end. Will have to wait and see on that one. If you like moe then K-ON!! is required viewing, obviously. :D

I posted my picks earlier in the thread.

As for stuff I'm still waiting for in 2010:

11Eyes OVA
Armored Trooper Votoms OVA
Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (OVA)
Break Blade (a series of films)
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzimiya (movie)
Eden of the East: Paradise Lost (movie)
Fafner: Heaven and Earth (movie)
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks (movie)
Gundam 00: Awakening of a Trailblazer (movie)
King of Thorn (movie)
Kurenai OVA
Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime (movie)
Planzet (movie)
Sekirei: Pure Engagement
Shiki
Time of Eve (movie)
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (movie)
XXXHoloc: Ro (OVA)

On a totally unrelated note, I found this recently. Those who have seen Black Lagoon will know how so very wrong it is.

I wonder if there is going to be another Bleach movie.

Oh, yes! :)

Yes, the Bleach Zanpakutou fillers are over and Tuesday the first episode of “canon” Bleach will be out. They start with a recap episode but it will already have a new start and end piece, something I am very curious about.

I have read brief summaries of the first episodes: The Ichigo vs. Ulquiorra fight is not just a copy of the manga but it seems there is a lot of extra material. This mix of “canon” and filler should be very interesting!

It could make this part of Bleach even more special. Although it is not out in anime yet the recent Shonen Jump magazine survey showed that fans already voted it to be on second place with not much difference to Ichigo vs. Byakuya. A new Bleach game Soul Carnival is based on it – and the movie at the end of the year will be based on it as well.

The first YouTube link I am posting is an advert for the Playstation game. It gives you a taste of what you can expect in the coming Ichigo vs. Ulquiorra fight. People who are easily spoiled should not watch it but it focuses only on a few action scenes and the complex character story behind it remains unspoiled.

The other YouTube link shows the so far first and only teaser for the movie. It is not a lot but maybe it is interesting to some.

OMG Revy what have they done to you?

On that subject, isn't it about time we had a third season? I seem to recall coming across rumours of a third series quite a while ago, but nothing since. :(

I think the talk is that there will be a Black Lagoon OVA at some point. They can't make a new season since the only arc left is still over and incomplete. So far they have made a point of not making up a fake ending so I imagine they want the same for the third season

EDIT: If you guy's havent read it, each issue of the black lagoon manga includes a short story at the end. Each of them are hilarious. That clip is an animated version of one of the short stories from the manga, they were made for the blu-ray release

July 17th. It will cover a portion or all of the El Baile de la Muerta arc from the manga. Sadly it's only an OVA and a not a full TV season. I have no idea how they're going to cram that huge 33 chapter arc into a 5 episode OVA but oh well they have more leeway as far as content with an OVA and the production values are usually higher. Not that Lagoon didn't look great already though. Hopefully, we'll luck out and each of the episodes will be long like the Hellsing OVAs.

Maybe it's just me but I would rather daisuki be translated as I really like you instead of I love you in certain cases. It is important to know that the Japanese do not throw around aishteru (love) casually. Moments when you use aishteru and daisuki are still really different. "I really like you" conveys a certain sense of shyness as well which might be important in certain context or for certain characters no matter how intense the situation is.

The funny thing is that from what people who have taught English in Japan have told me, girls will go around saying "I love you" (in English) extremely casually, so someone somewhere is teaching them that daisuki = love you. I guess it's just best to try to contextualize and adjust your expectations accordingly.

The second episode of Oofuri is also slow burn though, but hopefully it'll start chugging along soon. Everything noteworthy has already been mentioned above me, but I've been reading some interesting things about Rainbow. It seems to be a prison drama, from what I've seen of it.

Giant Killing probably has my favourite OP song of the season though. It's catchy. :)

While wating for more current stuff I just watched Princess Lover! and am about half-way through Kimi ni Todoke.

Princess Lover was just bizarre and really neurotic. I did enjoy it, but I think it tried too hard. I usually like it when a show can switch "moods" in a flash, but this one just seemed to be off a bit, so it seemed like it was just having an identity crisis. The course of the show was almost like they took the three seasons of FMP, neutered them, and then squished 'em into 12 episodes. I actually it would have been better served with 26 episodes. I would have given the writers more room to work out the weak plot and flesh out Arima's relationships a bit more.

While better over all KiT is really, really, really melodramatic--like painfully so. I do like the artwork style, though.

I've been working my way through Zero no Tsukaima (finished the first 2 seasons) and Flag recently, myself.

I find it funny that Princess Lover pissed off a lot of people by the end. I kind of just assumed that it would get wacky and nonsensical. I suppose it's good that it doesn't become a harem comedy at the end anyway.

KnT only becomes that way because Sawako is pretty much neurotic about her self-esteem problems, so every little decision becomes the MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER and she's SURE TO FAIL BECAUSE SHE'S SAWAKO. She's like the anti-Anne Shirley.

Still, I feel like it has enough honesty to overcome the premise. And certainly I appreciate the fact that she does everything on her own - even if they constantly have to have Shota tell that to the audience.

Well I finished KnT last night. I was really disappointed with the ending, or rather disappointed there was no ending. They go on a date that wasn't really a date, Shota takes her home, says goodbye and leaves. Show over. WTF!

I can only assume this is because, with all the talk of "next year" there's another series in the works.

IIRC, the tag was for the live action movie that they're doing.

But yeah, the manga really amps up after that, as someone new is introduced and drama is increased ten-fold. The problem is that there just isn't much there to adapt, so they ended it at the only place possible.

zakkrusz, How is Zero no Tsukaima? Flag is kind of interesting because of that whole PPV thing. I almost have to assume that it would have to look better.

Nope. They announced the two leads... some girl I don't know and the lead guy from Bloody Monday.

I think it was planned as a live action TV series at some point but that didn't work out I guess.

Zero no Tsukaima aka The Familiar of Zero is a franchise similar to Shakugan no Shana, one of those never ending Tsundere type comedy/fanservice/romance/adventure shows where the main character is always getting his ass beat by the woman who loves him but can't tell him and instead shows it through fits of jealousy and physical abuse. It's about Louise, a failure of a magician who, during her exam to summon a magical partner called a familiar, instead summons a regular Japanese teenager from our world and is stuck with him. Much comedy, and fanservice insues, though the storylines aren't too bad either.

Hah, fair enough. I suppose I could get into something like that after all the "alien/robot/catgirl/earth goddess comes to town to protect dopey lead" harem shows that I've seen.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen anything like that since ToraDora a while back.

But how's it supposed to work. The nuance of the show is one of those things that can really only be captured through animation. Otherwise you end up with something akin to dressing Rachel Leigh Cook in thick glasses and overalls.

Yeah. I mean, Japanese movies just don't have the budget to look as "good" as American movies, but they can do things with costuming, lighting and make up to bring out "Sadako" and "Sawako".

There are also some advantages to converting to film - I almost think it might be easier to digest without all the "pika pika" sparkly background shots that plagues every episode. I know that Kazehaya is the best guy ever, but geez. :lol

Here's a picture of the two leads anyway:

Speaking of anime turned live action, word on the street is that there is a Gantz live action movie coming out. I wonder how they plan on getting that past the censors
