I found those 'Naruto' chapters unreadable - the characters, much like the plot, were atrocious: everyone was trying to get him/herself noticed by some sociopath for no reason other than that they were madly in love with him
. And this cool/sociopath guy (the protagonist) couldn't care less about any of them.Only the art was passable.
And there were some superpower fights in there, too - white noise.
To each his own, I guess.
I was referring to the anime, though it follows the manga closely (at least, what I've read of it), aside from the filler.

I assume you're referring to Sasuke, but he's not really the protagonist; Naruto is, and it's Naruto that makes the series so enjoyable; the anime, that is. It works better as anime than manga in my opinion, though I doubt you'd think any more highly of the anime.
I remember some Naruto fans complaining that the author has started falling in love with Sasuke and has made him the main character now.

The anime certainly seems to be going that way at times, much to my annoyance. heh

Between what I read and what I skipped, I must have covered the latest 15-20 chapters of the 'Naruto' manga - that was ~a month ago.
If Sasuke (the dark-haired angry character) being focused upon extensively and every other character (Naruto and that girl - Sakura) salivating after him (as in stalking him and declaring their love for him) annoys you - well, prepare to be annoyed (I assume the manga is ahead of the anime storywise).
Finally watched the Haruhi movie myself. It was pretty good, despite being a bit too long (they could have cut so much exposition). It makes me think that Nagato is basically the heroine of this whole story though and that Kyon and Haruhi are just bit players. I`d definitely buy that twist. 
It's funny because I feel like after Endless Eight and Disappearance, she's the most developed character of the series despite herself. I can see why someone decided to do a spinoff manga about her wacky adventures in the parallel universe anyway.
Speaking of which, the 10th Haruhi novel will be coming out soon

I guess the show has mostly caught up though. I wonder if they'll stealth launch a season 3 in a couple of years.

No kidding, especially after TSR threw some new gears into the works. Hopefully, if they do make it the show won't suck as much an another certain long awaited Kiddy Grade sequel.

Not quite sure how that would work exactly, but it would probabally be interesting.
A rival megalomaniac band is trying to assassinate Yui because of her epic guitar playing abilities and only Sousuke can save her! Also, HTT plays their songs while riding giant mechs.
