Spooks Series 8

Seems Malcolm is gone and has been replaced by a new, younger, more dangerously living (being hit by a car and standing up again right after) guy.

It was an okay episode, seemed like a repeat of the a sixth series episode, as Jo was again having trouble separating priorities.

And the end was rather stupid, with the HS telling Harry about a new threat, greater than the last ones.
Isn't MI6 responsible responsible for threats coming from outside the UK?

Malcolm's really gone? Damn. He's had a lot of wonderful little character moments over the years. But I'm glad they let him retire in peace.

I shouldn't even be here, though. I haven't even seen Series VII yet!

^Yes, they are. But they can't be trusted so MI5 have to take care of it.

Well actually it depends. MI5 can operate abroad in order to prevent an atrocity at home, in the same way Six can operate in the UK as part of a wider operation which is mainly overseas.

Interesting to note that, if, British agents were present during torture sessions, it's likely they were MI5 not MI6.

Can I ask people to be careful re spoilers if they're gonna watch the Friday night BBC3 episode? I don't wanna have to avoid this thread between a friday and a wednesday!

Anyway, good episode last night, would agree though Gene Hunt's brother jus popping up to warn Harry of a threat felt like filler. Actually Harry and Ruth at the start felt the same. Love the fact that even though American has a new broom they're still being arses! I don't understand why the British didn't just play the Tazbek PM the tape of the guy saying he was going to start a war then become PM himself! You'd think that would have been enough for him to be pleased thug guy was killed!

Next week's looks weak. The female agent held hostage has been done multiple times already in the show. They did it with Zoe back in series 1, and in fact they've done it with Ros before now. If they are going to do it again I'd rather they put someone like Ruth in that situation than Ros.

Going back to this ep I disike the Lucas/CIA agent relationship, again been done before with Tom.

Tariq looks interesting, and is a nice counterpoint to the old school geek that Malcolm was. I just wish they'd be less obvious about having a token ethnic minority character in it. Be nice to have none for once, or more than one. But as it stands it just feels like everytime a black or asian character leaves they bring a new one in. Danny to Zav to Ben to Tariq.

By the way, am I alone in really fancying the pants off Ros?

Out of curiosity, is it even worth jumping in now without any knowledge of like... the last 4 seasons?

My understanding is that pretty much everyone dies every year anyway.

You just need to know Ruth and Harry have a thing for each other but she had to fake her own death to save Harry just after they had the first dinner date.
And i think Ross faked her own death but can't remember why now?

It had to do with Yalta, a secret organization that had various motives and goals during the Iranian arc in series six.

Not a as bad has i thought it was going to be but
i think storming the building should have been more of a SAS thing than a SO19 thing.
And there noway i brought the fact that these anti capitalist thought they where going to get out of there alive.

The way that the individuals don't last, but the job/organisation does, makes it a lot easier to come into than most series... ;)

Well this wednesday's wasn't quite as derivative as I'd thought.

slightly shocked at the ending because I actually thought Ros was going to buy the farm.

^^I agree by the way, barricading yourself into a bunker isn't the best of tactics from an escape point of view...unless their plan was to get out using the hostages...or it might even have been the deluded belief that their actions would have brought down Western society and they'd be hailed as heroes or something.

Ok I did not see that coming...well that's not true I saw it coming but I had the participents switched around!

Anyhoo, much better episode tonight. I thought Richard Armitage was very good. I wonder if Ros will deal with her guilt the same way most Spooks cast members do? ie by dying horribly!

isnt that how Spooks characters handle everything?

if she does die next week the show will need a new cast member

ha ha, good point. I'm not saying she'll die next week, might be a season finale type thing. Hope I'm wrong cos I like ros.

I would like her to stay this series, her death (exit) might be one too many for this series, kill her off at the end if its needed.

Spooks Ep 1/8

Wednesday 4 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC ONE

The team is in a state of panic following Harry's kidnapping by FSB agent Viktor Sarkisian as the compelling spy drama starring Peter Firth, Hermione Norris and Richard Armitage returns for a new series.

It seems their worst fears are confirmed when the Sacred Army of Righteous Vengeance (SARV) posts footage of Harry's execution on the internet. However, Ros refuses to believe Harry is dead and leads Lucas North and the rest of the team on a mission to find him.

When Sarkisian's body is found, it seems they've lost their strongest lead. Ros sends Lucas to try to extract information from new CIA liaison officer Sarah Caulfield but, despite a clear attraction between the pair, it appears she can't assist him. However, help arrives from an unexpected source when former team member Ruth Evershed returns to the grid, fearing for her life.
So the new series of Spooks starts soon, I'm still not entirely sure I'll watch, I've been slowly losing interest over the last few series. I've found it hard to get motivated to watch the entire run, but ended up liking it by the end of it, so I'll probably give it a go.

One of the best cop shows on TV (called "Mi5" in the States due to the term "spooks" having racial overtones). We don't get it on BBC/America anymore. So I'll have to rent it.

Like the British version of "24" but smarter!
