Spock and Uhura [SPOILERS]

Really? I got the distinct impression that they had already been involved for some time, just keeping it on the down-low.

Absolutely. The favoritism line. And rewatching the film I saw how often they show Uhura's looking at Spock, her reaction to something happening to him. It did NOT start in the turbolift.

I'm delighted by it. I'm a hopeless romantic, and I think it's a sweet relationship. I'd like to see more.

God help me, I'm a Spock/Uhura shipper.

I thought I had posted in this thread before, but I seem to have lost myself!

I loved the scene in the turbolift. I never saw it coming, but when it happened, it was clear that there were clues.

I don't think their intimacy in the turbolift was a new thing for them. It seems the relationship had been going on for a while, because they were very familiar with each other.

The scene in the transporter room, while maybe a little over the top, happened after Sarek told Spock he loved his mother - so perhaps Spock was more open to being open about it. Besides, it was before they were going on a mission where they could very well die, so there may not have been another chance.

And you know they put them together so the destruction of Vulcan could tear them apart. I really hope it doesn't happen, but emotional pain leads to more interesting stories.

My exact thoughts as I was watching it! And I don't even ship. Much. ;) :D

I was completely blinsided by Spock and Uhura, which made it all the more delicious. I n the turbolift, I really thought she was just trying to comfort him and things were getting a little hot. It wasn't until all the sexy kissing in the transporter room that I started to understand that they were actually into each other.
My first impression was that this was something new, that she had obviously been into him but only after his losses that day and his talk with Sarek was Spock able to open up to her. I have read convincing arguments that they were "on the downlow" before he reassigned her to the Enterprise, and the way they interacted when she demanded a reassignment...yeah, it does seem like something was going on.
I'd like to see Chaple get some screen time in the next movie to stir things up, but maybe she could get with McCoy instead. NuMcCoy is a hottie and he needs some love too!

Enjoyed the hell out of it.

You know, the funny thing about watching Quinto's Spock, for me, was simultaneously completely buying him as Spock and yet being aware with every shot that this is a new guy. Weird.

That just sums it up beautifully.

I like the Uhura/Spock angle. There were enough hints in TOS to not make it come out of totally left field - he seemed to have particular respect for her, and was also willing to jam with her. A newbie, or worse Chapel or Leila Kalomi, just would not have worked. And I liked the interaction - I agree that the elevator scene was beautiful.

On the other hand - the public nuzzle was a bit more jarring to me. First, in a crisis, I find it a bit worrisome that Uhura went to the transporter room just to say good-bye. And it was a bit high schoolish - yes the circumstances were emotional but even new Spock is an officer, an instructor, and very much on duty.

Indeed. Spock is often credited with bringing an entire generation of women into sf.

(Raises hand) Yes that would be me, and I'm quite all right with the whole Spock/Uhura romance thing. :)

That's me, also. I'm not usually a big shipper, but the Spock/Uhura thing sold me on this new timeline more than anything else in the movie. I just hate having to wait to see what happens next! (It also makes me wish I was Uhura for so many reasons...)

Yeah, but it was worth it just for Kirk's reaction!

ETA: Apologies for two posts in a row. I'm still getting used to this system, and haven't mastered the multi quote thing yet.

The timing of the reveal was what I found jarring. They gave no inkling of a relationship until just after Vulcan was destroyed, and then Uhura just throws herself at Spock. Did that give anyone else a "going to a funeral to hit on the widow(er)" vibe?

true, though they did give a hint that there was more going on there than a student-teacher relationship as she was able to bully him into putting her on the enterprise. i thought that was really odd at first, but after the reveal it made sense. spock is primed and ready for marriage. >_>

ME THREE. I have never been a shipper (though I did dally with T'Pol/Trip, but never really invested) but I am now a Spock/Uhura shipper all the way. If this just vanishes or has one line indicating it was over a year ago in the next film I will be heartbroken.

As a previous poster said it was very sweet and very intense. It really made me fall in love with Quinto's Spock.

Maybe T'Pring did make it.

And therein, young Padwan, lies to core plot point of the Sequel, XII.

OF COURSE T' PRING MADE IT. SHE WAS ALWAYS A CLEVER GIRL. POOR STONN WASN'T. THAT'S WHY HE GOT SUCKED INTO THE SINGULARITY, BUT SHE MADE IT INTO AN EVACUATION SHUTTLE. SHE ALWAYS KNEW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF HERSELF!!!!

Now the population of eligible Vulcan males is somewhat, how shall we say, limited? And T' Pring needs someone with whom to undergo Ponn Farr? And she finds out in a somewhat roundabout way that the man with whom she was betrothed is shagging an Earther woman?

defo fanfic material!

You can see the setup for a complete ripoff of Amok Time, can't you? Only with a girlfight to the death at the end.

The only question for Paramount is which A-List actress gets casted as the Woman Scorned? Any takers as to who plays T'Pring?

I am calling bullshit on any other plot points. I know Paramount too well. They want female mudwrestling. The setup involving Spock and Uhura opens the door for T'Pring too conveniently.

Uhura vs. T'Pring: Vulcan Cage Death Match. I'm calling it now. This script writes itself.

defo fanfic material

When I heard Spock say he wanted to avoid an appearance of favoritism I was like.. what is going on here?! I am happy I never came across this spoiler. I had read somewhere that Kirk sleeps with Uhura in this film and I was like, whatever. So it was a fantastically interesting surprise for me.

Now the Vulcan race.. 10,000 left. They had better start mating sooner than once ever 7 years if they want to repopulate. Remember the V'tosh Ka'tur, Vulcans Without Logic, group in Enterprise talked about trying to reduce the years between Pon Farrs.

Of course you have that whole can they have sex outside of Pon Farr question blah blah..

I doubt this will be left to nature - a good lab and harvested sperm and eggs will do the job. I assume there's some sort of uterine replicator available, or one can be designed. The real problem is raising the children that will all be born in the following year.

It was interesting... unexpected (I never would have thought to do it), but it actually worked fairly well. I am curious as to whether or not the Spock and Uhura in the original timeline ever considered a romantic relationship, or if this was purely an alternate-timeline development (it does seem to be an unlikely thing to have somehow been caused by the destruction of the Kelvin, but with the whole butterfly effect of changes in the timeline, one never knows...).

Looking forward to seeing where it goes in the (potential) sequel.

remember that scene in Plato's Stepchildren? remember how the women went from Spock to Kirk to Spock to Kirk?

'twas no accident.

of course it was considered, and scrapped.

at the time.

You are right Tikkun, it could not be left to nature and I'm sure they wouldn't do so.

Hey wouldn't it be amazing if (assuming this is the start of lots of new Trek) Uhura became a main character that had more screentime and plot than McCoy and Scotty? If it was a real triad of Kirk, Spock, Uhura. Now that would be a shakeup, and well needed IMHO.

The butterfly effect has definitely affected things...like Sulu's parent's doing something slightly different such that they produced a child looking more Korean than Japanese, or that Scotty seems to be losing some hair, or that none of the crew we're familiar with looks like the faces we originally knew them as . ;)

I theorize that this is the butterfly effect from the phasered wino in City - that gives long enough to create some interesting changes in genetics. Spock was born before Kirk, which means the butterfly effect started before Nero.

That is one good change from the sixties - the break up of the old boy network. I would really like to see Uhura get some good screen time in the next movie - and I find it incredibly refreshing that this seems to be an actual adult relationship.

Someone else mentioned Tuvok - and I thought of him in the theater - look, it's Tuvok's parents.
