Spider-Man: Homecoming' anticipation thread

Now that was a lot of fun. The other trailers have had me on the fence with this one so far, but this makes me far more inclined to go see it.
Which is funny because I just swung from the opposite direction. I'll still go see it but I'm less certain about it'll be what I would like.

Will they ever stop using those awful "drag and paste" character posters? Besides, it almost looks as if RDJ takes up more space than Tom Holland...

:wtf::lol: That is literally one of the worst movie posters... ever! Looks like the DVD cover of one of those $1.75 knock offs. Wow.

Well, Homecoming still doesn't look good to me. I'll watch it, but only because I watch all superhero movies based on DC/Marvel. I've been prepared for it to be the first MCU movie I actually dislike when they showed that Tony treats Peter like crap and takes his suit back, and this trailer has not convinced me that I won't really, really dislike this movie. Having marvel do Spider-Man was supposed to produce something better then those terrible Amazing Spider-Man movies, not something that looks equally as bad (although bad in different ways).

Movie poster art truly being artistically appealing left the stage in the 1990s, with the pre-digital cut and paste/airbrushing of actors on bodies clearly not theirs, whether on movie posters, or home video package covers. Since the influence of Adobe-kinds of programs, it was all downhill. Its more about selling the face than the experience the film promises. All one needs to do is look at the now-forced "brand art" for the Star Wars movies, where your complaint is very applicable.

Posters don't really sell movies these days, do they? It's the trailers, I think. And the Homecoming traliers look pretty great to me.

The only MCU movies I haven't really cared for are the Thor series, and I've never really been a fan anyway.

But in my addle-brained opinion, even a bad MCU movie is still pretty good.

I'm usually a big fan of the Thor and Captain America films . . . well, except for the last Cap movie.

Slightly off-topic, but the Silver Sable and Black Cat movie seems to have found a director and been given an official title.

Now, my interest in the non-MCU Spider-movies was minimal, but the writer at Epicstream brought up this quote from producer Eric Carroll back in April...

"Going forward we would definitely treat [future Spider-Man movies] all as the same slate. So we would be as strategic about where future Spider-Man movies fall in the MCU of it all as we would if Sony weren’t involved, because there’s nothing in it for us or Sony to put a movie out at the wrong time or start confusing the continuity."
(Emphasis mine.)
At the time, before these spin-off movies seemed like a certainty, I assumed that this referred only to movies featuring Peter Parker. But applying it to Sony's larger plans, I can see them setting the movies in same continuity of their own Spider-Man movie, and therefore making them all MCU by default.

There are so many characters that can be adapted to to the larger canon, and if the overall plan is to make them all MCU-compatable, I have to imagine that there will be some Marvel Studio creative influence involved in the process, perhaps even Kevin Feige himself, who is an Executive Producer on Homecoming, despite being the head of a "rival" studio.

I imagine that there would be nothing to stop them from mentioning Spider-Man or most of the events from Homecoming directly (and I'm sure that a mention of Tony Stark or somesuch wouldn't be a problem, all things considered), or even Spider-Man himself having some involvement. And even the MCU vaguely refers to the events of The Avengers as "The Incident". Same could apply here.

With that in mind (The probable Marvel creative influence more than the continuity), I'm willing to have more of a "wait and see" attitude towards this and other spin-offs.

I have to admit, hearing that the spin-off might be MCU compatible, does raise my interest level a bit.

My impression to date has been that they plan to work it out so the Sony only Spidey adjacent material doesn't overlap at any point with MCU material. So rather than integrated, it's just arranged so it doesn't get underfoot. Pretty much how the MCU TV properties have been treated to date.

I think Disney should step up and buy back the character rights from Sony and Universal and whoever else, no matter the cost. They'll make it all back in spades, and in the end we'll get better movies.

That assumes a willingness to sell, though. Sony knows just as well as you do that Spider-man is worth more in the long run than any one-time payment would ever benefit them.

Yeah, plus "no matter the cost" takes on a whole new meaning if Sony says "OK, you can have it all back for ten billion". Somehow I don't think Disney's stockholder's would be impressed with that financial outlay or the projections of how long it would take to make that all back. (note that they already get a hefty piece of the pie when it comes to Spider-man merchandising, so it wouldn't gain them all that much outside of movie world.)

A more likely scenario is if Sony corporate finally gives up on Sony Pictures (paradoxically less likely if this Spider-man movie is a success) and Disney buys the studio and it's entire catalogue outright.
