Spider-Man: Homecoming' anticipation thread

Or Marvel can troll everyone hard by announcning that Glover is playing Miles...and then it turns out that he's actually playing Miles Warren. :)

Sales, I would guess. I'm sure there are still plenty of tie-in books for the YA and Kids segments.

Nothing to spectacular in the photos, but it's still nice to know it's happening.

Tom Rothman talks about the studio's involvement with the film. It's nice to know where his priorities are

Who has greenlight authority?

Sony has the ultimate authority. But we have deferred the creative lead to Marvel, because they know what they’re doing. We start shooting the new Spider-Man in Atlanta [in mid-June].

Do you want to trim the costs of that franchise?

I don’t want to trim costs. I want to make money. And sometimes you make money by trimming costs and sometimes by investing in things that are profitable. A movie like Spider-Man by Marvel, that’s not inexpensive. But it’s a great investment. Knowing that Marvel has such a clear, creative vision, I sleep very well at night.

"Sony has the ultimate authority. That's what we have to say to make it look like we didn't beg Marvel to help us out."

It's simply the truth. Sony still controls the film rights to Spider-Man. They agreed to cede the creative role to Marvel because their last reboot didn't work out so well, but it was still their choice to do so. Legally and contractually, they'd have every right to overrule Marvel's decisions if they wanted to, but they're smart enough not to. It's win-win, because Marvel gets to include Spidey and his associated characters in their universe, and Sony gets the big bucks that come from riding on the MCU's coattails.

We all know that.

"Didn't work out so well"? Because Gwen Stacy got bumped off in the last film (which many people were anticipating in the first place), Andrew Garfield's second movie "didn't work out so well"?

By the way, does this mean Marvel is going to allow Robert Downey Jr. to hijack half of this next Spider-man movie, the way they allowed him to hijack half of "CAPTAIN AMERICA 3"?

Huh? Where in the world did you get the idea that I was talking about Gwen's death? I'm talking about the film's disappointing box-office and critical performance. These are decisions being made by businesspeople, after all, so their definition of "didn't work out so well" is going to be about how much money was made and what the future moneymaking prospects are. ASM2 was the least financially successful film in the Spidey franchise, and the critics weren't kind, so Sony decided to try something different.

Umm, you do know Downey doesn't actually write the films, right? They pay him to do what they want him to do. (He ad-libs a lot, sure, but within the framework of the plots they come up with.)

Based on critic and box office no. I enjoyed it myself but not enough people did.

To be fair Captain America 3 was following the Civil War storyline which was about a conflict between Ironman and Captain America. Robert Downey Jr's large presence was neccessary for that story. I doubt he'll be much more than a glorified cameo in Homecoming.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I found it to be the worst Spidey movie yet, by a substantial margin. And I wanted to see the Gwen Stacy story on film from the beginning!

They would do well to make as much use of him as they can. I doubt he's going to want to play this character forever.

I was so disappointed in the Amazing Spider-Man that I've never bothered to watch the sequel. It's too bad because I actually liked Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the movie. I wish we had a couple of more installments of Raimi's version.

On the other hand, I hated all of the Raimi movies and thought ASM1 was the only half decent Spiderman movie so far. The Lizard needed a better presence and the costume wasn't quite right, but overall it was quite enjoyable. There was also the whole 'peter's dad' conspiracy thing, but if they had just payed that off properly in following films then there wouldn't have been anything wrong with it.

Unfortunately ASM2 had no idea what it wanted to do and returned far too much to the ridiculous over the top character style of the raimi films. If they had cut out Rhino and completely redesigned Electro, there could've been an actual decent movie in there, but alas. At least Tom Holland is good in the role, even if Andrew Garfield got cut out too fast.

That whole story came from the Ultimate version of the character that AM1 was basing itself upon.

That's the frustrating thing about ASM2. It captures Spider-Man/Peter Parker himself more perfectly than any previous film, and in my opinion better than Civil War. Gwen and Aunt May are also fantastic in it, as are their scenes with Peter/Spidey. But everything else about its plot and characters is a complete, misguided mess. So there's a lot of terrific stuff that's worth seeing, but you have to put up with a lot of dumb stuff around it. (It's got a good musical score and pretty good effects/action, though.)

Does not compute. To each their own. However, even those who prefer the Garfield version typically like some of the series or at least SM2. Hate both 1 & 2????
