Spoilers Spider-Man: Brand New Day grade and discussion thread

How do you rate Brand New Day?

Sony's standard practice for making movies available for rent and purchase on Apple TV and Amazon is 45 days. However, because "No Way Home" was extremely successful at the box office, it was made available on Apple TV and Amazon after 90 days. Given that this film is expected to be even more successful at the box office than "Endgame," it will likely be available on rental and purchase services after 90 days as well.

Record opening weekend, beating Endgame's first weekend already. The movie is awesome, it gets really good reviews, audience score is top and it just started. This may be the first movie for Marvel in a long while to break the billion barrier.

So very carefully said Marvel is slowly getting back on track with their movies. Thunderbolts was awesome, so was Fantastic Four and now Spiderman. If Doomsday is on the same level i'm willing to say that they have recovered and turned the corner.

I was just about to post the same news (we need to sharing our minds!). Simply incredible to have such a massive opening.

However, there has to be some kind of asterisk to that opening (and perhaps many others, too) because it seems like they're counting all of the Thursday "preview " showings as part of the single-day take. I wouldn't think much of it if we were still in the days of midnight showing or a couple of late Thursday showings. But I went on Thursday at 6:20pm and that wasn't even the first showing of the day. I think my relatively small theater had at least six or so showings on Thursday (I can't remember the exact count and I can't look it up).

I'm probably overthinking it and it doesn't lessen the incredible achievement, but it feels a little weird to me.

Add me to those who almost expected Jean to have brought back MJs memories back (and Ned's, I guess). Although, keeping in mind that Jean said that there was no trace of Peter in MJ's memory, I thought the work-around would be that Jean would give them Peter's memories of their shared experiences.

i said the same thing about how jean grey would have brought back michelle jones and neds memories back

and someone on here said that jean grey did try to bring back there memories but somehow it did not work

which brings me say not even a class 5 omega level mutant can bring back someones memories

Yeah, I expected the same...and I'm really glad they didn't. I admire their restraint to restore the status quo and the trio will grow in a different fashion.

Given how Ned's memories clicked back into place, I wouldn't be completely shocked to find out that MJ does remember Peter now but hasn't forgiven him yet for having her memories erased in the first place. Why couldn't Jean find the memories in her head? Magic, of course.

I am in the camp that Ned didn't remember really.

But he felt a connection to Spider-Man and he didn't know why. Then he spent time with him and it was the most natural thing in the world. They connected so easily.
And then he learned that Spidey's name is Peter.
And then the guy with the flowers shows up at the end. And introduces himself as Peter and he recognizes the voice and the person as Spider-Man.
And things just click into place for him. Things suddenly make sense.

Memories didn't come back. But things made sense.

Loved the movie, hated the villainess in the story, or at least the version of her. The MCU seems to have this trend of turning classic heroines into monsters. Jean Grey was literally a teenaged terrorist. Other than that, I liked the dynamic between Peter and Frank and the ensemble cast, including Pugh and Ruffalo.
Yes, Jean was a terrorist, and just like in the real world, she did things that a small percentage of people who lose loved ones to big corporations and governments might do after going insane. She set the world on fire for her brother.

I've been listening to the soundtrack a good part of my evening. I've seen online complaints how the soundtrack has no real memorable stand out theme.

But that doesn't seem how Giacchino writes music.
I hear the movie's theme in almost every track. But each track is almost a narrative on it's own. Giacchino is a story teller with his music.
I really enjoy that.

It's absolutely worth it to deep dive into the score.

Does it really matter? I think studios generally take all the earnings up to the first weekend of release and call it the first box office weekend even if it isn't strictly just the weekend just to boost the numbers for the public to get even more people to show up in the following weeks when they hear a movie is financially a success.

I really hope that's it and it was a bit of misdirection.

Since we will never get a step by step explanation on how Strange's spell worked i hope it's just a sort of deep memory of Peter but none of them can actually describe it. It's like when you meet someone new but swear you must have met them in a past life and were best friends because you instantly click.

Since this is suppsedly the start of a new trilogy i hope they stick to it and re-develop their friendship and the love relationship between Peter and MJ but from a new angle where they're all a bit more mature, more knowledgeable and experienced, kind of how adult relationships start. Now that MJ knows there was something that happened maybe Peter can come clean at some point and sit them down to explain what happened and why, we'll see.

I finally was able to see it today. Thought it was great. For all the different characters from other parts of the Marvel universe - there is no question this is a Spider-man movie. Also as fantastic or uncanny 😉 the abilities of his opposition, not really a villian, this might be one of the most grounded superhero movies I have ever seen.

On Giacchino’s music towards the era end I heard heavy influence if not direct quotes of a very famous movie and its composer. John Williams ET score. Not the main theme but I believe when the mother is reading about Peter Pan and Tinker Bell. Very distinct piano notes. Anyone else pick up on that?

I think terrorist is the wrong description here. A terrorist uses terror tactics against civilian populations, killing and wounding them to show that their goverment can't protect them.

That's not what i saw. Jean used her powers to jump into certain people to do certain tasks they could do, to put Scorpion into a position where he could break into Damage Control, to get Peter off her track by jumping into MJ ( that was a shitty thing for her to do admittedly) and so on. Her main goal was to find out what happened to her sister ( not her brother) and V-Max is and how it was related to her sister.

Yes, she went overboard with the use of her force, especially when she unleashed the full Hulk, but the movie tried to portray he as a conflicted villain or rather antagonist who was wronged herself by the authorities. She is a criminal, that goes without saying and the movie takes the easy way out but then again that's what comicbook movies, especially supherhero ones, do in order to keep telling stories with these characters and it's where suspension of disbelief comes in to cover up the plot holes and unrealistic things happening.

Have not had time to read most reactions yet. Did seem curious that Banner is being locked up in a Psych Ward when he did for less damage than Jean or Spider-man himself. I am guessing for the past history of the Hulk not what happens here. Along those lines that “Psych Ward” might just be the public press release of where he is going. Very likely he is headed to a more secret site. Not being up on everything Marvel not going to try and guess.

Also, did Jean release the full Hulk? As long as she was in control he very much retained his Banner persona, just in Smart Hulk shape. It was after she lost control that he lost his ability to control the savage Hulk and he came out for the first time since the opening of Infinity War.
Jean did this, but I am pretty sure it was inintended. She done fucked up.
