Space Battleship Yamato

We might not. But they said we would so hopefully it's only for part of the summer. But they might try to justify it with "falling ratings." WTF? They keep moving it around without telling us and what do they expect?! Seriously? Seriously?! And I wanted to see Monster all the way through again!

What did SyFy expect? They never promoted the block or the shows there was a reason that Toonami was successful.

*Insert obligatory 'they had to make room for more wrestling' comment*

I guess I was lucky. Managed to grab subbed copies of the first two series off Youtube a year or so back. Great stuff even if the science is a bit wonky. I'd give nearly anythign to see a accurate remake using modern animation.

(I'm sure everyones already seen this, but its still on my list of Top 5 Coolest Things ever)

As much as I dislike the Starblazers dub, I actually preferred Desslok/Dessler's english voice. The Japanese actor just seemed like 'generic manly voice #4' to me. The english one had character.

Oh, man, the science. "A bit wonky" is a generous characterization. One of the things I remember most vividly about the original is how thoroughly absurd the science was.

Yeah, I always liked Desslok's voice (provided by Eddie Allen, apparently).

In the dub, Nova's the Radar operator and nurse on the Argo. I'd never seen this series before, so I was really getting into it.

Link to 2009 animated film up on Youtube (continues where the 3rd Yamato animated film left off back i n 1983, It's also got Enlish subtitles if you click the "CC" button)

Note: Again it takes place AFTER the 3 series and the last animated feature film, so it may have elements people just getting into the original Yamato/Starblazers may not recognize. Personnally, they didn't use much of the original scores from the TV series or earlier films, so I found that a bit dissapointing. The animation style is modern anime though and well done.

Didn't someone buy the rights to this show quite a while back? Was it shelved given the general failure of Hollywood anime adaptations?

I'm a casual anime viewer - neither a big fan nor averse to it. Should I watch this? I'm not sure about old animations and bad science though. In other words, what's good about this series?

Old animation? My response to that is there are more important things than animation like story and characters. Yamato is old yes but it is so old it has invented most of the cliches anime fans hold near and dear Macross and Gundam owe a lot to Yamato. Bad science? Since when have most science fiction properties have good science? It's no worse than an average Star Trek episode.

I don't know much about the show. Just asking what fans find great about it and why it stands out. I watched the whole of Legend of the Galactic Heroes (when I had much more time than now) and enjoyed it. How do they compare?

It's kind of apples and oranges but I think if someone likes LotGH they might like Matsumoto's work since they seem to be more old fashioned although something like yamato or GE 999 are more fantasy and less realistic. A typical Naruto/Bleach person that's into more mainstream stuff probably wouldn't care for it imo.

1) Yamato - while it has spurts of dialogue, is nowhere near as dialog intensive as LoGH.

2) While there is a basic plot/theme to the Yamato stories, there's nowhere near the depth of characarters or backgrounds.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses; and like it's been said above, it's kind of apples to oranges. Sort of like what Star Trek did for science fiction on U.S. television and I'm talking after first run when the syndicated reruns cught on) - Space Battleship Yamato did for Japanese Anime back in the early 1970ies. FYI - the first Yamato series was originally scheduled for 52 episodes (and Leji Matsumo was going to introduce the character of Captain Harlock in the Yamato story); but due to lackluster ratings in its original run, it was cut to 26. But, like Star Trek - the series got WAY better ratings for its Japanese syndicated reruns; and spawned the compelation film that was released worldwide, which got U.S. companies looking at it - although that was around the same time as Star Wars was hitting it big too in the U.S.

But, (again as was stated above) - Yamato introduced a new way of anime storytelling that cauught on, and has been a part of ani,me production ever since. During it's time, compared to what animation was in the U.S. at the time, it was leaps and bounds beyond anything done for U.S. TV before as well.
