Space based race?

My memory is fuzzy, and I think the answer may be yes, but in all of live action trek did we ever encounter a race that had developed into a space based culture? I don't mean they evolved to live in space, just that they primarily live in space - going habitats with no need for planets. Whether it be stations or ships.

The Boomers? I never did figure out where they actually lived - did they have planets per se?

A purely space based race is a cool idea. I'd like the Boomers to be like that.

Being primarily a TOS fan, I'm not that familiar with TNG, DS9 or Voyager. Did any of those shows ever portray a culture of space nomads, something like Earth's Gypsies or the Plains Indians of North America?

Weren't the Trabe relegated to living solely as a space fleet by the time Voyager had discovered them? I don't recall how long this had been the case however.

The Fabrini from "For the World Is Hollow And I Have Touched the Sky". They had forgotten they were living in a mobile habitat, and had been for hundreds of years.

^I thought about that, but the episode with those Sulibians in the prision implied that Sulibians are scattered on different planetw.

Some are, but I got the impression the largest groups live in space where they aren't oppressed and such.

But the Fabrini were ignorant of that fact. That episode was a riff on Heinlein’s “Universe.” I was thinking of a race that has no permanent homeworld and chooses to live a nomadic life in space -- although I can't imagine what advantages there would be to living that way. Would they move from star system to star system while following herds of space buffalo?

^no, they would build colony ships that would move from resource to resource such as mineral rich asteroids.

The Borg were not Space Based. Remember when Species 8472 attacked the Borg? They blew up a couple of planets in which the Borg inhabited.

Doesn't mean that planetary squatting was a major part of the Borg lifestyle. When Earth was assimilated, there were barely nine billion Drones there. In comparison, the Borg Unicomplex of "Dark Frontier" was holding trillions.

Basically, if we cannot argue the Borg are space-based, we can't argue that humans are planet-based, either; after all, several of them live on space stations...

^No, they were space going creatures.

Why would that disqualify them? They could still have a spaceborne culture.

This.
