Someone Might Be back. Again. (Possible Spoiler)

I think we've gotten away from the original point of this thread, which is the fact that River is possibly coming back more than once this season and that is awesome.

RiverSong..jpg

I think it is interesting that she appears to be up to trouble. I get the feeling that this younger River Song may have been the more Vash-like archeologist, as in less interested in science and more in theft.

In addition to that super-sexy spy shot of her above, I do believe the Doctor finds her under arrest at one point, yes? I guess that is where the handcuffs come from.

@Turbo ^ Well, "awesome" remains to be seen, at least IMO. I just hope she doesn't overshadow what's important -- namely the Doctor and Amy. But I have faith in the Moff, so we'll see. (And I didn't even realize that was her until I saw the pic here. It flashes by in the trailer so fast, I couldn't tell)

What makes you think she's not what's important, too?

I mean, heck, for all we know, she may well end up being the Doctor's companion by series end. (In more ways than one!)

Agreed. I would love to see River Song appear a couple of times this series as a build up to her being the series 6 companion.

I'm hoping that for once in the new show, we get the same Doctor/companion team two seasons in a row.

Also if she were to travel with the Doctor...well why would she stop travelling with him? Silence in the Library/Forst of the Dead seems to make it clear that their relationship is all over the place and non-linear so I'm guessing a long distance (in every sense of the word) relationship suits them both.

How do we know that they are lovers, let alone husband and wife? Has Rusty or Moffat actually said what the relationship is between them?

She might travel with him for awhile, but ultimately need to go off on her own. River may be very much like the Doctor: strong willed, a wanderer. Their relationship might work BECAUSE she allows him to go swaggering off, and he allows her to have her own adventures as well.

Also, it probably helps that she doesn't mind the Doc taking these cute little girls along with him. I noticed she didn't seem jealous of Donna at all in Silence/Forest. Maybe she is able to understand that the relationship is never sexual, and that it is more like a professor/student than anything.

Quoting Davies from page 304 of The Writer's Tale (Mk. I):
I ask [Moffat] not to spoiler me. He's written 4.9 already, so I've read that. It's called Silence in the Library, and it has a character in it who I'm just sure is the Doctor's wife (!!!), but I don't like to ask.
Davies assumed that River Song was the Doctor's wife.

Page 316:
In the early hours of the morning, Steven Moffat delivered 4.10! At last! It's brilliant, of course. Such an imagination. It's staggering. I'm not sure I understand it yet, but then I read it at about 3am. We're trying to get Kate Winslet for River Song, who's sort of the Doctor's wife, and Michael Gambon or Ian McKellan for Dr. Moon. Fat chance!
Davies doesn't seem to have been disabused of the idea that River Song is the Doctor's wife.

Interesting casting!

Kate Winslet would have been fascinating as River Song. Though I'm quite happy with Alex Kingston, frankly.

I don't see Michael Gambon.

Ian McKellan's agent had turned down Deadline, the Doctor Who Unbound play that starred Sir Derek Jacobi as Martin Bannister (and possibly the Doctor).

Wow, that would have been wonderful. I absolutely adore Kate Winslet. That being said I think Alex Kingston was smashing as River Song. I can only hope they manage to get Winslet in a future role.

I can't really see Gamdon as Dr. Moon either, but I disappointed to hear that McKellan's agent turned down a Big Finish audio play. I would love to see him involved with Doctor Who.

The best shot for Winslet would be a feature film, I think. Same for Rachel Weisz, who is also a Who fan.

McKellan was coming off of filming The Lord of the Rings, and when Deadline was offered his agent passed on it, thinking that McKellan was tired and wouldn't be interested.

You figure McKellan's going to be in New Zealand for the next year, so the earliest we might see him in Who would be season seven.

You're probably right about Winslet. I've heard about Weisz being a fan, so I'm still hoping she'll show up on the show. She would be a smashing Romana. :D

Ah, that makes sense then. And quite true that he'll be busy in the near the foreseeable future. But one can dream...

I liked the actor they got to play Doctor Moon. Sir Ian is, of course, amazing, but I think the part would be too small for a star like him.

What I wonder is, will the Doc ever plan an escape for River from the Library mainframe? If so, we get to see Doctor Moon again. I mean, she's still in there, and the Doctor doesn't give up easily.

I could see Winslet doing an episode, but I think it would be very much one episode so getting her for River wouldn't have worked. Again I could see McKellan doing it as well; this is the man who did Corrie and a panta for goodness sake!

Her first professional work was in one of RTD's early series, so the connection was there. I believe that it was scheduling that scuppered her playing River Song in the end. Which is for the best because as you say there'd have been no chance of getting her back for multiple further episodes.

Yes Dark Season which someone handily brought me as a present 2 Christmases ago. It'w quite good and lord is she young in it.

I think she'd have made a fab River, and I also imagine that Moffat would have been flexible with the character if whoever was cast wasn't up to repeated visits.
