So when did the continuity firm up?

I know this has been hashed and re-hashed, but I'm not seeing it, and a little lazy today.

I'm embarking on readingsome non-TOS fiction, and I'm trying to figure out when the "new" continuity started. Mostly regarding TNG.

To make my task less gargantuan, I'm strating with the relauch of the various series, especially DS9 and ENT, and they seem to have a clear relauch point. But what about TNG?

I'm thinking of just starting when they stopped numbering the novels, as that seems to be about the time that the TOS novels started becoming better and a little more consistent continuity-wise.

So, if I'm doing this, what TNG novel is best to start with? Death in Winter? I'm guessing.

That depends on how far back in the timeline you want to start. Pretty much anything written after the start of the DS9 Relaunch is more likely to be part of the current continuity. However if you wondering just about the Post-Nemesis TNG (these are the TNG Relaunch) then yeah, Death in Winter was the start of the series.

^ However, it might be worth pointing out that the tighter internal continuity on the TNG series was in evidence before that, during the nine-book "A Time to..." miniseries.

Diplomatic Implausibility was one of the first tNG books to truly embrace the wider continuity, tying into the then-upcoming DS9 relaunch as well as New Frontier. Enterprise-E books like Immortal Coil and the Section 31 installment also fit together, and then the A Time to... series sort-of crystallized a running continuity for tNG, which both Titan and the post-Death in Winter relaunch used as a base.

All 9 books in the "A Time To..." series are rather hard to find for a decent price (I've been trying to find three of them at a good price for over a year). But since all of the books in that series, with the exception of the finale, are duologies, I just started with the final duology by David Mack (A Time to Kill / A Time to Heal). Then I read KRAD's A Time for War, A Time for Peace (the finale) and then started in on the TNG-R starting with Death in Winter. You may also want to read Articles of the Federation (also by KRAD) even though it isn't a TNG book, as it fills in a lot about the current political state of the Federation and the Alpha Quadrant races that we all know and love in the new tighter 24th century.

Don't give up on finding the Time To... series. I recently was able to nab the whole set for about $3-4 each on Ebay.

Don't feel too bad. I lost out on a bunch of other ones, like the whole Titan series, because I was too cheap.

Of course the continuity isn't a perfect fit as later canon would change some fans pre-conceptions, but with this list I was striving more for the intent of continuity rather than the long-term success of it.

FYI, the latest nod to "old school" Trek novels came as recently as the latest Vanguard novel, Precipice, in which events from the novels from '84/'85 called The Vulcan Academy Murders and The IDIC Epidemic are mentioned in a letter from M'Benga to Fisher.

Okay...it seems to me that it began around "Genises Wave" and "Gateways". A Time To... refers to those two a bit.
