So what was the deal with Robert Beltran?

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but is it true that Beltran hated being on Voyager and was constantly outspoken about it? I just saw an old video interview with him clearly being critical of all things Star Trek and of Voyager. I've heard that he has a dry sense of humor but I got no impressions after watching the video that he was joking at all. If all this is true, then it's certainly disappointing because now when I watch reruns of Voyager I have to be reminded that he hates me and hates his job so it kind of takes the fun out of it watching it, you know? I think now I understand why he was the most underused character on the show, the writers knew he didn't give a sh!t.

I think it's the other way around. That he has a lot of disdain for Voyager because the writers couldn't do anything worth a damn with his character. It's the explanation for the vast majority of his performances being very lackluster as well, IIRC. Curious though, got a link to the video in question?

Hallo anothertrekfan,

first- I met Robert Beltran 2006 at German Fedcon. His panel was great. He was very charming, witty and entertaining. When he signed autographs he was very polite and friendly to all the fans. He got a very good feedback by many fans after the Con

He didn`t tell us that he hates Voyager. He enjoyed most of the time there. But he spoke about some things he didn`t like, for example Endgame.

second- watch this- there`s nothing about "hating Yoyager"

Enjoy Voyager! Robert Beltran doesn`t hate Voyager and his fans. I know it.

Although, Chakotay was not my all time favorite character out of Star Trek, I did enjoy his character on the show and thought it was a cool idea that they tried to put a Native American into the Trekverse.

So whether he enjoyed the series or not: I thought he was a great addition to Trek and can't imagine what it would be like without him.

He's expressed frustration with the way Voyager developed in its later years, but I think it is unfair to say he hated being on the show. After all, he still does conventions, doesn't he?

Lately he's been in 10 episodes of Big Love on HBO, as a guy (yes, Jerry Flute) associated w/ a casino (besides doing theater).

For the paycheck?

What has he been doing recently anyway?

He's Jerry Flute on "Big Love."

You can go HERE to see what Beltran thought about Voyager--it's kind of fun.

Also, he seems to have been busy with the law: "Actor Robert Beltran and members of a crew filming an episode of Big Love on location in Arizona were arrested during a dispute with authorities, police said Thursday. After leaving a bar called La Brisa del Sur, Beltran was asked by authorities for his papers to show that he was not an illegal alien. Beltran became irate…."

Beltran is an actor, and would have wanted his character to be well developed. the fact is it was not!

we never knew what tribe he came from. we never even knew who his mom was, or if she was still alive. And his native American heritage was one of the defining aspects of the character.

Chakotay's poor characterisation was one reason IMO why Voyager only was a good show, and not a great show like TNG and DS9.

that's a bit harsh, the great distance made visits by mom and dad as plot device difficult. it never crossed my mind to criticize ds9 and tng for not introducing me to o'brien's, jadzia's, and riker's moms. they had more serious issues. ds9 for example, a first officer constantly on the edge of a nervous breakdown. i liked the nice and quiet 1th of voyager a lot better.

I saw that interview years ago and I was insulted back then. But now I realize that everyone can't like trek and, even though he could have shown more tact and respect for his fans, he is entitled to his opinion.

I don't think that Beltran hates Star Trek or hated being on Voyager. he was dissapointed over how his character were shoved in the background in the later seasons.

He had ideas and suggestions which were totally ignored by those in charge and I can understand that he felt frustrated when everything became more and more focused on Seven, The Doctor and Janeway while the other characters were shoved in the background. Note that Beltran's character was supposed to be the second most important character in the show after the captain, just like Riker was to Picard.

No doubt that he was annoyed.
