So what was the best single special effects shot in the 10

We really ought to differentiate between "special effects", which are those created live on set, and "visual effects" which are done separately. The sonic shower in TMP is a special effect (using a beam splitter), the Enterprise in space is a visual effect, and the energy probe is a mixture of both (practical strobe light source moved around on set, overlain with visual effects).

Khan's pectorals.

They were real, Montalban was in great shape...

I don't think it matters too much, either one is something 'fake' created by the film makers to trick the audience into believing they're seeing something that is not real.

By that definition an entire movie is a special effect.

The Klingon Cruisers in the opening shot of TMP.

Just wow. It's my favorite science fiction special effect shot of all time. They took an already awesome TOS design and made it one the most intimidating ships that I have ever seen in a shot that both scares me and makes me want to see more. It's just so artistically done.

Fabulous shot, the music just goes so well with the scene too. You've got to love the design of those battlecruisers - they were so underused in the TOS movies (here's hoping they put in an appearance in ST3)

I always saw it as a bit of a reply to the opening shot of Star Wars too, hell you could even say the opening shot of ST09 you could say was a homage to both. My only criticism is that it doesn't look very crisp, unlike Star Wars, I've never seen the Blu Ray version - did they clean the film up for that?

They did some clean up on the BluRay in terms of making the matte lines less obvious and space a bit darker, but the DNR made the ships come off on the soft side. The Director's Edition actually contains a fix that didn't make it onto the BluRay which was a flapping blue energy thing on the bottom left side of the screen. It's one of those details that tells you the Director's Edition team were working with a finished print of the cut rather than the unaltered negatives because their efforts in removing the effect can be seen when it appeared over the cloud.

CBS, when they were remastering TNG for BluRay actually had access to the film elements from the movies and one of the raw takes was the middle battle cruiser. What makes the take interesting is that the model is highly lit and up against a black background. I don't know if it was a heavily lit pass, but the model had an incredible amount of sharp detail to it. Gosh, I bet the folks at CBS did their own super HD re-construction of that shot but due to legal issues had to keep it amongst themselves. If I had access to that footage and we were recomposing shots all day, that's what I'd do in my spare time.\

So yes. They DID remaster the shot, but only for TNG and only for a few frames.

Oh, great idea for a thread.

There are lots of individual shots from Search For Spock that I love.

The shot of the Enterprise approaching Spacedock near the start of the movie.
There's a shot of the Bird of Prey swooping around to destroy the civilian ship I like.
As others have pointed out the Enterprise "reversing" out of Spacedock gives a real sense of the size of the ship.
As the Enterprise approaches Genesis there's a nice shot.
The Bird of Prey landing on Vulcan.

Huh, that's more than a single shot...

Got to pick one... I'll go with the Enterprise approaching Spacedock.
