So what was the best single special effects shot in the 10

In terms of dramatic impact, the first one that comes to mind is the cloaked Klingon ship materializing in front of the whalers in The Voyage Home. That's a great scene.

If we're talking First Contact, one of the best effects shots in that movie, and therefore the original 10 movies has to be the big pull-back at the beginning, that really was excellent.

To me, that was about the only "big screen" shot in First Contact. At the time, it was considered the longest pullback in film history.

Agree - the fleet battle and hull walk were very good but that beginning was epic. First Contact really did blow it's wad early in the film didn't it?

I thought the topic here was a single shot, not a sequence.

To me it's the "beat Dykstra" shot at the end of TMP, where the Enterprise passes over the camera, which pivots around to follow her as she moves away and then blasts off into warp drive.

Similarly, while I don't think it's the single best shot, I still love the introductory pass over of the Amar in TMP.

Then again, TMP sometimes feels like one interminable sfx shot :)

That shot is the "Dykstra" shot that the "beat Dykstra" shot was meant to top. :)

Very much so.
That's not to say I don't like First Contact. Indeed, it is my second favorite TNG movie behind Nemesis. The story is much better than Nemesis, but Nemesis out-big-screens every other TNG flick, including FC. (personal opinion only :) )

Yeah, that was a pretty sweet shot. Definitely the best of the TNG films.

I'm partial to the opening shot of the Kelvin.

I know the technology and financial resources are different, but the Abrams films are just chock full of one impressive effects scene after another.

My favorite nuTrek shot is whichever the first one is from the Kelvin bridge looking out the main viewscreen/window, when the camera turns in a way that shows us the extent of the saucer in perspective.

I wouldn't even know where to start if I was talking about JJTrek

I think the shot of the Borg Queen descending to her body looks pretty good.

I'm sure I have better examples, but one that shoots out for me is the Enterprise simply flying from one side of the screen to the other on impulse to Khitomer.

1)Agreed! Love that's shot! Beautifully shot &great sense of traveling.

2) The Klingon Bird of Prey hovering over the Whaling Ship in "Star Trek IV". Great shot- sense of scale, love the way it hovers, and you can sense how that hulk would freak out sailors.

3) The entire Enterprise theft in Spacedock/Excelsior "chase"

4) As someone mentioned - the burning holes in the self destruction Enterprise in "III"

5) The torpedo shot ripping right thru the Enterprise saucer in "VI"

Probably the best shot since the TMP Enterprise reveal to really indicate what a damned big ship we're looking at. The actual Enterprise reveal in 2009 isn't even as impressive.

Totally agree, being a big TMP fan I much preferred the Kelvin's introduction over the Enterprise in ST09
