So what was the best single special effects shot in the 10

But TWOK also had at least one "shutter streak" shot, too: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=34&page=4. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, but was that some of the reused TMP footage (I'd assume it was)?
From the E going to warp just before the wormhole.

I do like the TWOK version; sorta looks like a big screen version of what we saw in TOS. Was never a fan of the rainbow tunnel in TMP or the rainbow contrails we see later.

I actually hated the TWOK redo of the TMP warp effect. It looked sloppy. And, yes, the rest of the warp shots were a budgetary cheat. On TMP they streaked the model by moving the camera with the shutter open. Henceforth, the warp drive "trails" were airbrushed artwork overlaid onto shots of the ships zooming by.

For the airbrush trail, I assume you're talking about this: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=43&page=4.

That's the aforementioned redo of the TMP shot, meaning not a new shot, but they reworked the existing shot.

I really like how the Enterprise seems to blast through the stars in the TWOK version over the rainbow effect of TMP. It remains my favourite warp effect of the entire franchise.

A few from Generations that I've previously overlooked...

Stellar Cartography - looked amazing on the big screen, If only they'd have fitted it to the Enterprise E.

The destruction of the Veridian III sun - I think looks superb even by today's standards, big, epic in scope and I actually think it looks better than the destruction of Vulcan in ST09.

The Enterprise B in the Nexus - specifically the approach shot with the ship lit up by it on the right of the screen, and the shot as it's escaping it are both very well done. The explosions of the ships trapped in the Nexus were excellent also. Marks down for the re-use of the Excelsior warp shot from TUC, mind.

Saucer crash has already been mentioned, but suffice to say I think it still looks awesome and is a very clever use of miniatures and model work.

The opening sequence with the bottle of champagne was intriguing, well staged, creative and just an overall great scene too.

In fact, despite it's problems, I think Generations is one of the most visually spectacular Trek movies, no question.

I agree- Generations looks absolutely fantastic. Probably the best looking film since TMP. The Nexus effect is actually quite good. I think the Nexus scooping Soran off the mountain top is one of the iconic effects shots in the franchise. Very nice.

Yes that shot of Soran arms raised with the nexus about to claim him seemed to be everywhere at the time of the movie (by everywhere I mean in all the SF magazines)

To me it's the "beat Dykstra" shot at the end of TMP, where the Enterprise passes over the camera, which pivots around to follow her as she moves away and then blasts off into warp drive.
Was going to cite this one; couldn't remember if it was from VI or TMP...:bolian:

Damn, another one I'd forgot, yes that pic seemed to be everywhere in 94.

I just noticed today that when Data's emotion chip malfunctions on the station, his face warps a little bit to show his facial components freaking out under his skin. Subtle, and I never noticed it before. Thanks, CGI!

Yeah it was subtle enough for some people not to notice, if they'd have gone too far with the scene the CGI of the day would have probably let it down. As it stands it looks fine.

Yeah, that shot of Data made me think of the decompression effects in Total Recall (Der Schwarzenegger version).

Speaking of which, has anyone ever noticed Spock's face contorting and bulging as he rapidly ages in TSFS toward the end? I've always thought that was unbelievable for the time! I have no idea how that was done. Maybe some of our special effects enthusiasts (Maurice?) have some insight??

^ That's a fairly standard effect in which thin bladders are applied to the skin, disguised with makeup, then inflated and deflated with squeeze-bulbs attached to tubes.

I think they may also have used the "An American Werewolf In London" trick to make the face change shape. Basically, you have a flexible "skin" and the underlying skull can be deformed to stretch that skin into another shape.

^ That could be it. Unfortunately this effect doesn't seem to be covered in the DVD extras. Might it have been mentioned in a book?
