So, what was going on in the Laurentian system?

I like the notion that the fleet was there in a show of force against the Klingons. Hell, for all we know, the Klingons might have been preparing to attack the Laurentian system before they got an emergency call about a big-ass Romulan vessel. In a weird way, that would mean the Narada short-circuited a Klingon-Federation battle.
Yeah, I could subscribe to the fleet's presence in the Laurentian system being a result of Klingons, keeping an eye on Romulans, or because of Axanar. All interesting explanations.

Nothing was going on in the Laurentian system. The Laurentian system lies in the Coward's Hideout nebula. ;)

They could have been watching the Klingons go Visagoth on the Romulan's asses after nero's escape, just for the hell of it.

You remember that "new" race that DS9 introduced at the end of the 3rd season? I forget what they were called, (the Tzenkathi I think?) but the Defiant was suddenly called to action, and there was apparently this heretofore unknown starfleet history of a war with these guys (the plot of the episode was a changeling had taken control of the Defiant and set it to attack and start a war with this race and it was a whole 'which one of us is a changeling?' plot).

Yeah, there was a conflict with those guys at the Laurentian system.

(why not? May as well give these poor phantom enemies some burn)

edit: Just googled and yes they were called the Tzenkathi

I dont know but it must have been something big if we assume that the primary fleet is hundred of vessels, as would probably be needed to police a territory the size of the Federation.

Maybe the Narada had appeared in that system briefly to throw long-range Starfleet sensors and tracking stations off the scent of where Nero REALLY wanted to be?

So, did the film say "Primary" or "Main" Fleet in the film?

If so, then that would be reason to assume that this is starfleets fighting fleet, a bunch of ships designed for combat and that they have still have alot of ships out there exploring the Galaxy, just too far away to be of any use in Earth Defense.

At least I hope that, the thought of every starfleet ship available save for 7 at Earth in one location has to have a hellova good reason for the build up. Chances are it could be in retaliation to a buildup of 47 Klingon ships (which the Narada took care of) and starfleet was just keeping them there in case they crossed the border.

I like the idea that it was the Tzenkethi. Although, maybe we should completely forget the Tzenkethi ever existed. They were in a SINGLE episode. And we never even saw them anyway!

Also, given what starfleet is, how about this.

There was an environmental disaster on a Federation world and the fleet is evacuating an entire planet. That mission accomplishes all we need in the plot

1. There is a large fleet that is occupied.
2. Whatever they are doing is time sensitive and important to the point where they don't divert to Vulcan.

Lets say you have 100 ships with an evacuation capability of 10k each. Assuming (based on our new warp speeds) it would take less than 50 minutes of round-trip travel time to the closest M class world and 4 hours of load, unload time between transporters and shuttles, it would take 8.5 months to evacuate 1 billion people.
