So ... what is it with the Stardates?

Stardates don't have to make sense. But I am happy whenever they are used. Please no more mention of Gregorian calendar dates in Star Trek episodes.

My guess is that in the 23rd century, Stardates are derived from a subspace signal transmitted (from Earth?). So the date received is lower further out.
