So what exavtly happened to Primin? And Eddington, for that matter?

So once upon a time, in the first season, Lt. Primin was assigned to represent the Federation side of security on the station, but he was only ever seen in two episodes before he mysteriously disappeared. Later on we got Eddington, and we know why he eventually disappeared, but during his tenure as an officer on the station we hardly ever saw him. His episode count between when he arrived and when he left is dramatically low. What was the deal? Why introduce a senior officer they couldn't afford to/didn't want to show regularly?

I think Primmon and Eddington (well, at least at first with Eddington) was to take advantage of the unique situation having Odo as security chief provided them - that Sisko, Kira, et al may trust him, but Starfleet wouldn't.

Rightly so, they dropped that particular story point (and the characters) once it ran its course.

One thing I wish they would have done though would have been to have a Bajoran counterpart to Bashir. A Bajoran doctor he could butt heads with over medical issues. As it is, near as I can recall, Bashir was the only actual doctor with an M.D. behind his name on the station full time.

Eddington joined the Maquis (or as some spell, Marquis) and became Sisko's nemesis. Eddington got a goodly amount of shows around his character.

Re: So what exavtly happened to Primin? And Eddington, for that matte

...For all we know, Primmin remained the station's Starfleet top security man even when not seen, and/or got a steady stream of successors who all failed to make a major appearance in the stories. I mean, how often did we see Kirk's security chief? For all we know, it was Giotto all the time, despite this man only making a single appearance.

Whether there was any gap between Primmin and Eddington that was not filled by another, unnamed top security man... Well, Eddington's dramatic addition to the cast for the of "The Search" sort of suggests that he filled a vacuum. But it could equally well be argued that this Lieutenant Commander was simply the first Starfleet security boss with a rank and billet high enough to challenge Odo's overall authority.

The more interesting aspect there IMHO is whether Starfleet sent any challengers after Eddington turned out to be a bad apple. But after Eddington's story potential had been used up, the writers didn't milk the character's departure for further dramatic value by explicitly establishing that Starfleet now trusted Odo and was ashamed of earlier distrust - or perhaps had ceased trusting Sisko, too, and had given up on trying to control the wormhole through the station, preferring a more direct control via Starbase 375 and its starship forces. After all, Eddington's departure coincided with the abandoning of Bajor's neutrality in the middle of major external threats, and the arrival of warfleets.

One thing I wish they would have done though would have been to have a Bajoran counterpart to Bashir.

And a Bajoran engineer to match O'Brien (although they did do some stories with Bajoran apprentices to O'Brien). And a Bajoran scientist to match Dax (although there were visiting scientists and some stuff on Bajor not really appreciating scientific study of the Celestial Temple).

Eddington died rescuing maquis survivors from the Jem
hadar in season 5

Re: So what exavtly happened to Primin? And Eddington, for that matte

Was it stated that Primmin's assignment was meant to be long term? We know he was on the station to make sure a crucial shipment of goods made it through the station, but once that was over he might have only been on the station for a few more days or weeks before moving to oversee another security matter elsewhere.

As for Eddington's low appearances, they might have had trouble getting him due to him doing other work or for personal/family reasons clashing with the filming of the show.

I wish we got more involvement on the show from Eddington before he joined the Maquis, I always liked him.

Eddington was mentioned several times by name before his departure to the Maquis, so even if the character was onscreen, he was still a presence.

After Eddington was gone, I can see Starfleet leavin' issues to Odo...not because they trusted him, but because sendin' someone knew would have been admittin' they were wrong to send Eddington. And, if anything, the admirals would hate to admit they were wrong.

And I always saw Primin as a temporary character.

he was a likable character and seeing him more would have made his switch all the more dramatic.

Its a good bet that Starfleet did not bother replacing Eddington. Sisko probably refused to allow him to be replaced. Odo specifically tells Sisko to remind Starfleet Command that the reason that they sent Eddington in the first place was that they did not trust Odo. At that point there was no way that Sisko was going to trust anyone else with that sort of authority.

Why in the world would the Bajorans send scientists to study the wormhole?

To the Bajorans, it wasn't a scientific thing. It was a religious icon, a place of worship that they believed in and had faith in, not something to be poked and prodded.

It'd be akin to the Catholic church sending scientists to Nazareth to break down the molecular structure of the rocks and stones that Christ's tomb was made out of. In other words, nonsensical.

Re: So what exavtly happened to Primin? And Eddington, for that matte

The Vatican has it's own Observatory.

The Vatican Observatory was established by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 “so that everyone might see clearly that the Church and her Pastors are not opposed to true and solid science, whether human or divine, but that they embrace it, encourage it, and promote it with the fullest possible devotion.”

Not all Bajorans are religious, although the vast majority of them seem to be. The scientists are probably regarded with suspicion by a large proportion of the population. Even examining the wormhole would be seen as blasphemy by a large number of Bajorans.

Re: So what exavtly happened to Primin? And Eddington, for that matte

The Bajorans did join a joint project to set up communication through the wormhole as well.

Personally i always though that Eddington's posting was a cover and that he really worked for Starfleet Intelligence and after he left well that job could have been done by Worf given his experience.
