So what are you reading, now? Part V

I finally finished A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers, as my book club's selection for February. While interesting, it could have been a little shorter for my taste.

And FINALLY I'm re-entering the world of Trek Lit, with David Stern's The Children of Kings.

Great book. But then again it is a Pike book...

BTW Love your avatar.
Thanks!

Next up is One of Our Thursdays is Missing by Jasper Fforde.

I only read that one at home, since the format of the book isn't really suited for reading on the train in my opinion.

So I've also started to read CSI: Shock Treatment by Greg Cox while "on the road".

BTW I only realized that I haven't seen a single episode with Fishburne's character yet when I read Greg's acknowledgments (for some reason I always read Afterwords, Acknowledgments and About the authors first).

I'm 150 pages into The Eugenics Wars trilogy book two. I can't begin to express how much I've been enjoying this series. Our buddy Greg is one hell of a writer.

The only negative comment I have is that it'll all be over after the next book.

Wow! Thanks again.

You're welcome my friend.

Please, write a fourth volume. Please? I'll give you money.

$7.99 to be exact.

I'm not sure there's any more to do with Khan--we've pretty much covered his entire life!--but, without giving too much away, I do have a new STAR TREK project in the works, which explores another "lost chapter" of STAR TREK history.

In theory, I'm going to write the book this spring, so we're probably talking a pub date sometime in 2012 . . . .

Thanks again for the encouragement. I'm looking forward to writing another TOS book again.

Yep. I'm expecting the contract any day now. My plan is to finish up the YA novel I'm working on now, then dive right into the new Trek book.

I wasn't even thinking Khan. I was thinking Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln. Your books hinted that they had other adventures outside of Khan. Thirty years worth if my count is correct. Hell, that could make a book series of it's own. Kind of like their comic book series a while back.

Cool. I love Trek books that explore new eras of Trek history.

I want to get back to Gary and Roberta and Rain Robinson one of these days. In fact, I briefly considered trying to squeeze them into the new book somehow, but it just felt forced . . . .

I still need to read that comic book series!

(Plus the new KHAN comics, of course.)

I used to be a big fan of Pronzini's Nameless Detective series, but lost track a few years ago. I should see whether any of the ones I've missed are still in print...

Here's the list:

Thanks, I'll check that out.

Currently reading Turncoat by Don Gutteridge, a historical mystery featuring a British army officer stationed in Toronto in 1836. Looks like three books in the series were published over the last decade, but they're being reprinted and marketed by Simon and Schuster with the promise of more to come. Not quite Sharpe meets Murdoch Mysteries, but entertaining so far.

I just finished an intense novel of the Russian Revolution and Stalinist-era politics by Robert Littell, called The Revolutionist, and am starting on Kenneth Latourette's The History of Japan.

I'm also debating my next Trek read -- Reap the Whirlwind or Paths of Disharmony?

Reap The Whirlwind. Paths is good, but Whirlwind is phenomenal.

Just finished up Rogue, the TNG entry into the Section 31 series. It was okay. But I liked Cloak better, which is weird because I usually like "Things Aren't Aways as They Seem"-themed novels, especially those involving Romulans.

Moving on to the DS9 entry, Abyss.

I'm reading 'American Science Fiction TV' by Jan Johnson-Smith for my paper due very soon on Asian Americans in Trek.

I turn to the page on 'Race'....and the only thing spoken about are: Interracial kiss between Uhura and Kirk; Geordi; the tired, negative mention of Code of Honor; Let This Be Your Last Battlefield, Sisko....and nothing else.

Latinos? Hispanics? Asians? No mention of them...(They figure into 'race' as well Jan Johnson-Smith....)

The author does mention Native Americans in the next section, which is titled 'Echoes of the West: Native Americans'...which is only a passing mention towards Chakotay and the Indians in 'The Paradise Syndrome.'

Wow....

How far we need to go.

Now, I do have Trek fiction books in my pile (a dirty pile in my room since I have so many things going on now) that I want to read, but it's very difficult to actually read them since I am aware (or have an issue with) certain questionable representations in the franchise.

Aside from Trek, I wanted to start Asimov's 'Foundation' series, but found out that there is a 'Prelude to Foundation' and I may have to put that on hold since there are other books I would like to read.

(Holy deja vu! I recall typing something about the 'Foundation' series awhile back...)

Anywho, I think ever since I saw a picture of the character Arkady, I've wanted to read up to 'Second Foundation.'
