But I like to think it showed how much confidence the admiralty had in him, that they gave him a Connie as his first. If you think about it, it doesn't make sense that Starfleet would give such a big, important ship to a novice captain.

Is his official rank of his first command Captain in your novel? I'm not too familiar with actual US Navy Ranks, but I assumed a Commander can command a small vessel.
I adore what she’s done for the Voyager relaunch.I am revisiting Kirsten Beyer's Full Circle. I'm only 100 pages in, but hot damn, this is impressive writing. The existing characters ring true to how they were in the series, and the new ones like Eden, Batiste, and Cambridge are fascinating. I had remembered Part 1 as being just Klingons and Golden-era wrap-up, but there are a lot of seeds planted for the upcoming journey, too.
Something I am finding with Beyer's writing is that it gets better the more life experience you have. I can relate to a lot more of what the characters are thinking about and going through 10 years on than I could on initial release.
I absolutely love the Kelvinverse movie overall, but that is the one story point that does annoy me. I understand they wanted Kirk in command by the end of the movie, but there's really no reason they couldn't have at least had him some kind of junior officer onboard when Nero shows up rather than still a cadet.Yeah which means the Kelvin Starfleet is run by a bunch of idiots
