So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest eps

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

Seasons 1 + 2 are without doubt the worst two seasons. But if your stil bashing TNG by the time you've watched 'Best of both worlds' then TNG is clearly not for you.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

If you can't remember watching Yesterday's Enterprise, The Defector and weren't thrilled with The Best of Both Worlds, then it sounds like TNG ain't your Trek. That sucks, cuz I really liked it!

Uh..."Yesterday's Enterprise" was like Season 5, guys...

Episode 15 of Season 3, according to Memory Alpha.

And according to disc four of the season 3 DVD box, which I hold in my hand at this very moment.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I thought "Chain of Command" was a stronger and more harrowing TNG two parter than "The Best of Both Worlds", which although was not a bad two parter on principle was kinda of outdone by its own reputation and I learnt enough about it from DS9's pilot and First Contact, after I likely forgot about it when I was 7 years old. Voyager's Borg episodes such as "Scorpion", "Drone", and "Dark Frontier" were broadly funner, even though they were not necessarly higher in quality than "The Best of Both Worlds" (which must've been Earth shattering when it first aired).

TNG was not a terrible show overall, but it was creatively suppassed by DS9 and Babylon 5, with its somewhat pleasing memory pissed upon by three mediocre to awful TNG movies (First Contact being the odd one out).

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

....One thing I don't like about DS9 is that there is a whole lot of episodes where we hardly don't see anything of Sisko at all. I like his character the most and feel that he is was underused, at least in season 4.

Wow! Talk about opposites--I watched DS9 in spite of the ever... so... boring... Sisko character. It was a blessing to me when they didn’t use him in an episode. If he’s your favorite you might also enjoy the home shopping channel and QVC.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

100% agree, thank goodness he didn't have the attention lavished on him that Kirk, Picard, Janeway and Archer did!

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

When I came to the last disc of the set & saw The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 I nearly shat myself, I thought to myself "This is going to be AWZUME!!". I was wrong. It was better than most of the other episodes I'd seen previously, but not by a lot. They were not episodes I see myself re-watching either.

I had the same reaction. Don't get me wrong. "The Best of Both Worlds" was pretty good. But it seemed filled with unecessary plotholes.

I was never that impressed by "Chain of Command" either. Sometimes I think that two-part episodes were never TNG's forte.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

Damn I just picked a random disc of season 3 last night and 3/4 episodes were absolute gems! This season rocks and I feel sorry that the OP doesn't enjoy them.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I’m sure that BOBW loses a lot of its punch if the viewer is familiar with Voyager before TNG. Voyager’s Borg are pitiful compared to TNG’s Borg. If your experience with the Borg consists of “The Neutral Zone” and “Q Who,” the Borg are a mysterious and terrifying presence, but if you’ve seen seven seasons of Voyager, they’re just another bad guy.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

It's completely understandable to find S1 and S2 a bit of a struggle. I love TNG, but sometimes it leans way too heavily on the "family" episodes. I especially can't stand S2 "The Icarus Factor", which follows one of my favorites from that season - "Time Squared".

BOBW is held aloft a lot, but this is Star Trek - opinions vary! Personally, I love the weirder episodes - the aforementioned "Time Squared", later episodes like "Cause and Effect", "Tapestry", and S7's "Parallels", "Phantasms", and "Emergence".

I'm surprised the OP didn't mention "Sarek". I mean come on, what kind of a standard are you holding TNG to? It seems to me that you're not really giving it a chance. Maybe you're doing something else while the episodes are on? I dunno.

I like "Sarek" because it gave his character more flesh to the bones, I didn't love it though. The scene after the Mind Meld between Picard & Sarek was great however, great acting by Patrick Stewart.

What? Where the hell would you get the sense that I don't give the show a chance? Hell I bought 6 freakin' seasons of it even though I wasn't a big fan, just so I could give it a chance, episode per episode, instead of just watching them randomly whenever I get the chance to on TV.

I got that from your not seeming to remember key episodes. But perhaps this is just a factor of not remembering titles. Obviously excepting "Sarek" :rommie:
All I can say is, I hope you find some joy in it. TNG lacks the sort of saturation of TOS - for instance - the scene you mention in "Sarek" is a powerful one, attaining levels of intensity TOS goes to a lot more often - which is partly TOS's strength, but also something for which it gets mocked. TNG is also lacking the musical impact of TOS, except in rare cases. But nor do I find "bland" to be a good description.

For another 2 cents, maybe you should go through S4-S7 more selectively. Check Trekcore or Startrek.com, and look over the synopsis. Some people uniformly can't stand parallel universe type eps, or family-oriented eps, or have a preference for starship battles, klingons and politics. In this way you can cherry pick whatever jumps out at you as an ep you might like, and then you can look over the others later. That way you won't experience a "grind" if you're not digging certain eps. Being non-serialized, skipping around shouldn't throw you off much - oh! with one glaring exception of note..
You just watched BOBW2 - some DVD sets might not have "Family" as the next episode, which actually directly follows BOBW2.

Personally, I think TNG just warms up with S3 (yes it takes this show as long to warm up as TOS's entire run:rommie:). 4-6 is the sweet spot IMO, and if you like surreal eps S7 has a few doozies.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

Yeah, going through TNG again (and being at season 4 right now) I'm actually surprised as to how much I'm enjoying the show. its been a very long time since I've watched the show all the way through and it stands up alot better than I would have expected considering what people say about it.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I say move on to DS9 if you haven't come to like TNG by the start of the 4th Season.

But watch DS9 in order. The first two seasons are a bit problematic, but it gets very good around season three and lasts until the end. DS9 is sometimes stand alone but it also has mini arcs and somethings that happen early get revisited later. To be honest DS9 replaced TNG as my favorite series.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

From my understanding, The Best of Both Worlds part 1 & 2 are supposedly one of the best episodes in TNG history, a real fan favorite. Is this correct?

If that is so, I'm afraid I might be selling my TNG DVD's shortly. I struggled through the second season, thinking it was ok at best, but mostly forgettable. But I had also heard that season 3 was the best, or one of the best seasons of TNG, again I struggled to get through the season. So far I thought to myself that this show has, to me, absolutely zero re-watchability.

This is really a shame, because I like some of the characters, Picard mostly. I also like Worf & Data. The others however, are as dry as Betty White's underwear (stole that from the Shatner roast, sorry) Totally uninteresting. Hell I almost like the annoying little shit over Riker. The only line he's uttered to my delight was the ice cold way he delivered "Fire" from First Contact.

So if I haven't gotten into the show yet, should I give up? It took me 8 months to go through 2 seasons, one of which is supposed to be one of the better ones.

So, let me get this right. You buy the DVDs and now you've watched up to BOBW II and you haven't been downright gobsmacked like you thought you should be and you are seriously considering whether to continue watching.

A correct synopsis of your position?

Assuming yes, then clearly you had two options. First, sell the DVDs and invest in something else. Second, suck it up as a bad purchase (won't be the first or last in your life) and move on.

But no, you decide that the best way to deal with this is to...get straight onto the TrekBBS TNG thread and bitch about it because...???

Reads like a wind-up to me, like so much else on these threads these days.

So far, based on the reactions, it seems to be working for you.

I clearly came on here to ask those who are familiar with this show if there is still a lot of good episodes that could make me warm up to it after season 3. I have gotten mixed responces, some has urged me to continue while some others have told me to let it go since it is probably not my cup of tea. The responces have been helpful so far, you being an asshole for no apparent reason doesn't do any good though, so why don't you refrain from posting in this thread since it clearly does no good. Simply put; Stay the fuck away. Thanks :)

On another note, I'm glad I've kept watching season 4, because I watched one of the better episodes yesterday: Data's Day, that was a good one. I saw another good episode too recently, I can't remember the title but it's the one where Riker gets fooled by this little kid so he can stay and keep him company.

Oh, and the episode where Ensign Crusher finally leaves almost brought tears to my eyes. I think the best is yet to come now that he is gone :p

He comes back in a few guest appearances in season 5 and season 7.

Oh ok, I'm horrible at remembering episode titles with pretty much any showI follow. TOS is the only show where the names of the episodes has stuck with me.

Re: So The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 is supposed to be two of the finest

I feel your pain, Axel. Although I enjoyed most of it the first time, I'm universally bored by TNG upon repeat viewings. My wife wanted to buy the set for me for a birthday present; I pleaded with her not to because it would have been a waste of money for us.

That being said (and I don't want to offend TNG fans), if it's not to your taste, then it's just not to your taste.

Whoa Axel, some anger issues, I see - yet another reason for you to stop watching TNG ASAP. It's clearly not doing anything for you.
