So Tell Me about Maine

where along the coast? I was born and raised in the mid-coast maine region...
Bascially along the I-95 corridor. I start in Yor, move up the coast to Portland, through Fairfield, and end in Houlton with detours to Thomaston, Rockland, and Oxford with a whole bunch of cities in between.

No kidding, that's pretty much my neck of the woods. If you get a chance, Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is the one on the Maine State Quarter, and along your way.

I spent a memorable Fourth of July weekend in a cottage on the ocean in Thomaston one year. We ate lots of lobster and the view was pretty. :)

Despite being a New England native, I don't know Maine well (more than Rhode Island though). But I've been there several times, along the coast and it's beautiful! Have fun!

Portland is awesome, great area.

You should go to the Head House, it's a lighthouse somewhere near Portland... I think....

If you've ever read a Stephen King novel, you know that Maine is the single most haunted, possessed, demon and alien-infested place in the world. Stay away at all costs if you value your life and your soul.

That's actually one of the reasons I want to move there.

When I was a kid, way back in the dark ages, my family had a summer home in Maine. Castine, to be specific. It was a safe, beautiful, green and friendly place for all of us.

We had lobster and blueberries all summer long.

Maine is an absolutely beautiful state! I'm originally from Oregon (lived in Boston nearly 20 years now), and it's the part of New England that reminds me most of my old home, especially the coast line.

If you have the time to get off the interstate and take the old highways closer to the water, I would highly recommend it. Much more picturesque (and no tolls ;) ). And if you have time, take a drive out Shore Road in Ogunquit. Stunning views. Old Orchard Beach is really nice, as well (a little bit south of Portland.

Portland is just a wonderful little city. Coincidentally, it was just named the United States' most livable city by Forbes Magazine. :bolian: I especially like the old port area downtown. There are some great old hotels down there, wonderful restaurants, art galleries, shops, etc. In fact, if you're looking for a great dinner spot, try a restaurant called "Fore Street" on ... wait for it ... Fore Street. ;) The food is just phenomenal, and you'll get some views of the harbor.

Unfortunately, while I've spent a fair amount of time in Portland and points south, I haven't gotten much north/east (know as "Down East") of there, so will have to leave you in someone else's capable hands for that part of your journey.

Enjoy yourself. And, I promise, the weather will start turning nicer the longer you're here. ;)

Well, I can tell you I'm going to Maine for a weekend getaway this weekend. The Wells/Kittery/Ogunquit/Kennebunk area. I'm in a suburb of Boston and its only 100 miles from here.

We just plan to walk along the beach and through some of the woods, check out some of the quaint little towns, and take in a seafood feast.

I love the beaches there this time of year. You can just walk along for miles and its pretty quiet. I'm not into the heat or the crowds but its perfect this time of year for me. Might even dip a toe or two in. I also like that you can bring your dog on many of the beaches this time of year.

I think it's cool that the country has rules that force FrontLine to stay in the corner states, thus protecting the nation's core values. :techman:

Bah, SILENCE YOU!!!! :p Anyways nothign to report here. Its raining. One of my clients suggested I check out The Union Bluff Pub on York beach tonight. Oh and the next hotel room over is having a domestic. Oh yeah and its raining like no tomrrow. I will say that York looked to be a quaint town.

I'm not sure FrontLine is ready for a real lobster yet. He's used to those crayfish they call lobsters in Florida.

Also like Oregon beaches.

What suburb are you in? For some reason, I thought you were a Vermonter ....

We miss you. Come home. :)

I come home often. Unfortunately, when I was there in February I was in a near head-on collision coming back to the valley from Cannon Beach. :scream: Damn black ice (the other car hit a patch and spun into my lane) and thank God for air bags and seat belts. And insurance; it totaled the rental car I was in. But I still love my home state. Next time, maybe you, me and Gibralter (and any other Oregonians) should meet for a brewski. ;)

Yeah, damn rain. They even canceled our beloved Red Sox (blessed be their name) home opener because of it. :klingon:

^ Did you get lobster yet? :D

Yes, when in Maine you must have real live Maine lobster. Nothing like it. Just like in Oregon you have to have Dungeness Crab or Salmon, and in Florida you have to have ... what? Alligator? :p

I hear you. Winter was worse than normal this year. I ended up cancelling a couple of trips to the coast due to conditions in the Coast Range.

A meet-up for a beer or two is an excellent idea. Keep it in mind for your next visit.

I lived in Vermont for several years, it was awesome. We moved here about a year ago after my wife finished grad school and took a post doc here. I'm in Framingham.

How about you?
