Maine is an absolutely beautiful state! I'm originally from Oregon (lived in Boston nearly 20 years now), and it's the part of New England that reminds me most of my old home, especially the coast line.
If you have the time to get off the interstate and take the old highways closer to the water, I would highly recommend it. Much more picturesque (and no tolls

). And if you have time, take a drive out Shore Road in Ogunquit. Stunning views. Old Orchard Beach is really nice, as well (a little bit south of Portland.
Portland is just a wonderful little city. Coincidentally, it was just named the United States' most livable city by Forbes Magazine.

I especially like the old port area downtown. There are some great old hotels down there, wonderful restaurants, art galleries, shops, etc. In fact, if you're looking for a great dinner spot, try a restaurant called "Fore Street" on ... wait for it ... Fore Street.

The food is just phenomenal, and you'll get some views of the harbor.
Unfortunately, while I've spent a fair amount of time in Portland and points south, I haven't gotten much north/east (know as "Down East") of there, so will have to leave you in someone else's capable hands for that part of your journey.
Enjoy yourself. And, I promise, the weather will start turning nicer the longer you're here.
