I've converted to Blu Ray, mainly because the conversion is far cheaper than the one from VHS to DVD

True. It took quite some time for DVD players to become affordable. They were insanely expensive at first, supported very few formats other than DVD video, but just five years later or something, they practically started giving them away. Not to mention that they've gotten better and more versatile too.

Blu-ray player prices dropped in no time in comparison. You can get a decent machine for as little as 100$ these days, I think.

Still, I have very little desire to actually get one and start building a collection.

People have wondered whether viewing of TPM improves in some way after reading Darth Plagueis. Well, it does. And not because you can find a certain character lurking somewhere in the background; you can't ( don't waste time looking for him, you maniacs ). It's because the film itself, while flawed by almost universal consensus, is simply not as bad as it has been made out to be.

The book improves the movie because the movie is flawed to begin with, but not that flawed?

That makes no sense. If the movie is bad (but not that bad) to begin with, what does that have to do with the book?

You were lucky. I heard Lucasfilm recalled all the copies, asked stores to give them back the dvds whether they were sold out or not. That is the only reason why the dvds are expensive right now.

It is nice having the Limited Editions, but I find myself watching the SE more these days. I'll take better picture quality over some minor changes any day.

If it makes you feel better, just do what I do and just tell yourself that Han and Greedo fired at the same time, but Han was the only one to hit his target. That is something that happens all the time in those old westerns.

For me, it's not about "looking better". I don't care about that, in this case. I'm primarily about story. And the SEs are replete with changes that are more than cosmetic. They alter character trajectories or tones of scenes, and not for the better.

The Han Solo/Greedo thing is just probably the most agregious example.

I've the original films on DVD from the last OT DVD release. Until Lucas releases those on Blu Ray (and I don't see that happening), he won't get Blu Ray money from me.

And I'm ok with that. DVD is fine.

I don't understand. How was I lucky? I bought the 2 disk 2006 versions, back in 2006 when they were new, and paid full price (whatever that was). I was only pointing out seeing a copy of A NEW HOPE in the discount bin at my local Walmart to prove that they are obviously still available. You just need to know where to look.

Did Lucasfilm really recall them? I didn't know that. What the hell for? More of Lucas' belief that the Special Editions are "the only real versions"?

I don't think they recalled them. I think it was "this is all we are making - once they are out, they are out." Eh, who knows? There will always be those few that still float around.

Don't know if it's true or not, but that's what I was told too by Wal-Mart, Target, and at Best Buy when I went looking for a prequel trilogy DVD set last year: They were told to pull unsold units and return them to the distributor and only sell the Blu-rays-- with slight variations from store to store, Target said they were told they were being sent back for destruction (which I don't buy).

I'm not. 3D is overrated.
However, I probably will go see A New Hope in a few years.

If all goes according to plan, I'll talk my oldest to see it. Do I care about what changes or that it's in 3D? Nope. My kids wants to see Star Wars in a theater and that's all that matters.
