I was just curious what everyone's opinions were on this, now that we've seen the movie.
One thing this movie seems to make very clear is that this crew was "destined" to wind up together on the Enterprise, one way or another. You can explain it away by saying that it's the "universe correcting itself" or some such thing, but for all intents and purposes (and no matter what force you want to attribute it to), Destiny seems to be at work.
Personally, I'm a bit divided on the issue. On the one hand I LOVE the original idea that these are just a bunch of professionals that have risen naturally through the ranks, and just so happen to be serving together on the Enterprise when we meet them. There's kind of a gritty, hard reality to that Starfleet world which I've always liked-- and which is a nice counterbalance to some of the outrageous stuff they encounter in their adventures.
But on the other hand... the idea that there is something special and magical about that original TOS crew has a lot of appeal too. I mean, this is the freakin Enterprise, after all. Considering how many times Kirk and crew have saved the universe, maybe they WERE all destined to be together. Who knows? I gotta admit, the movie definitely makes the destiny idea work (at least this one time).
Anyone else really torn on this? Or is it just me?
