So is everyone OK with the "Destiny" thing?

I was just curious what everyone's opinions were on this, now that we've seen the movie.

One thing this movie seems to make very clear is that this crew was "destined" to wind up together on the Enterprise, one way or another. You can explain it away by saying that it's the "universe correcting itself" or some such thing, but for all intents and purposes (and no matter what force you want to attribute it to), Destiny seems to be at work.

Personally, I'm a bit divided on the issue. On the one hand I LOVE the original idea that these are just a bunch of professionals that have risen naturally through the ranks, and just so happen to be serving together on the Enterprise when we meet them. There's kind of a gritty, hard reality to that Starfleet world which I've always liked-- and which is a nice counterbalance to some of the outrageous stuff they encounter in their adventures. :D

But on the other hand... the idea that there is something special and magical about that original TOS crew has a lot of appeal too. I mean, this is the freakin Enterprise, after all. Considering how many times Kirk and crew have saved the universe, maybe they WERE all destined to be together. Who knows? I gotta admit, the movie definitely makes the destiny idea work (at least this one time).

Anyone else really torn on this? Or is it just me?

Spock just knows what kind of friendships are possible, and wants that. Spock also knows how much being with Kirk has helped him as a person, and wants his younger self to experience these things.

Q

Think about it. He loves sparring with Picard. He would totally take the time to make sure the universe auto-corrects itself just enough that his encounters with Picard won't be changed.

Seriously, it would require an eye blink from him to accomplish. I totally believe he'd put that amount of effort in if it kept the Federation just enough on track that his time with Picard won't be altered.

The reason I love this answer is that it explains why the Enterprise history corrects itself, but explains why the universe allows the destruction of certain key planets.

I am cool with destiny. It is weird in the mirror universe though where everyone ends up identical to someone in the other universe but doesn't necessarily produce offspring with the same person as their twin in the other universe does. This is kind of dumb.

Kirk and Spock have a real feel of destiny in this film.

I know I'm being a bad Star Trek fan, but what are these quotes from again? I'm drawing a complete blank.

They're not from Star Trek. They're from Lost (JJ Abrams' show that's BIG on "destiny") changed to fit Trek. :)
