Oh, Yucaipa; yes, we used to play them in high school sports all the time. And I think we were the only ones on our street who were not military. Both March and Norton were open then, so everybody seemed to be one or the other -- except us. We were corporation brats.

Mom's place in Hemet was a couple blocks from the reservoir. They moved in there before it was built, and we watched it built. The lights at night were bright. But Dad died in 1988, and I moved Mom back to Virginia six years ago. Never made it to see the collection, but it looks interesting. Dad took me over to the La Brea Tar Pits collection in 1987, which was impressive.

Yeah, I also remember games and meets against Grand Terrace, probably '71-'72-ish.

The Western Center is interesting, in several senses of the word, but since specimens had to be collected quickly, while construction was underway, it'll never be on a par with the La Brea Tar Pits collection. Still a work in progress, though.

Meanwhile, on-topic: I did like Star Trek. Wish I could have got out to the theaters more, but it's going on my list for DVD acquisitions.

When it was all said and done with, I loved it. Sure, it has it's faults, but overall I enjoyed it greatly.
Did you like the new Enterprise design as much as I did?
I thought it was at least as good as the first Motion Picture refit.

Actually, that was part of the reason I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not. Seeing all the photos of the ship that were released prior to the film, I was not impressed. I pretty much had the same impression a lot of people did about it to begin with. In some ways I still do, I still think the neck sits too far back on the secondary hull and the nacelles do not fit the rest of the ship. Seeing her in action though, gave me those same old chills and strong emotions the prior ships did so, all in all, I can live with it. It may or may not become an iconic ship to me, only time will tell, but I have no problems accepting it as the Enterprise and look forward to her further adventures.

No. I've seen stories done much better than this.

I am pretty convinced, by the way, that with the way the Kelvin and its tech looked, that the nuTrek universe is NOT an altered or offshoot timeline of the original, but was from the start a parallel universe.

I think you are kidding yourself.

As mentioned too many times before, I was (and sort of still am) a "Change NOTHING!!!!" person. There was no reason for them to make so many visual changes, when what they did to the uniforms shows how close they could have come with many things and still "updated" them.

I'm also, however, looking forward to the next film with anticipation. This is the shape the Trek genre has now taken, and this is all the new Trek we're gonna have. I'm on board and want to see what's next.

I'm not sure what that means about Spock and Nero. Were they from the original universe, or from the future of this one? I dunno.

Again, tho', this is the only game in town, so it doesn't make a lot of difference. Nero's gone, Spock Prime ain't gonna be around forever, so this new universe, whatever it is, is what we'll be getting more of, and I'll be happy.

Just please, no more quasi porn scenes with Kirk. (Or anyone else.) I know this is the 21st century, but let's just say people have always liked Trek to be something to share with the kids. Let's leave a few things offscreen, like the original series did in that regard. Trek doesn't need that to be good.

I voted YES and agree that this had to be a alternate universe before Nero got there based on the ship designs and every crew using the delta insignia among other things.

Why even screw around, just call this movie a reboot. There is nothing wrong with a reboot, I enjoyed it.

We had one of those big color console TV's for the last two seasons. My dad was not a spendthrift, but he liked television a lot. I think moving to SoCal in 1967 might have influenced him. We got heaps of channels from L.A.
I remember those console sets. Whereabouts in SoCal?
I'm jealous!! We had a whopping 13" black & white television. I watched my first color TV in the community room in college. Now I have a new Samsung 50" DLP!

OOPS  I believe I saw TOS on the 19"...didn't get the 22' until 1970! Which I had until 2001! But the 19 incher was color, and man was that exciting! I watched things I would ordinarily never look at just because I could see it in color. I had a 13" color TV in college, and I sure watched a lot of ST reruns and old movies on that sucker...Monty Python, Masterpiece Theater, Great American Dream Machine - those were the days!

I now have a 34" widescreen CRT, whichalthough it has a gorgeous picture, at 178 lbs is something of a dinosaur itself. I sincerely hope there is a 50+" Panasonic plasma in my very near future. :)

I found the first screening quite overwhelming (didn't help that it was midnight and on IMAX), enjoyed the second and disliked the third (when I had time to actually think about what was happening).

I did not go back for a fourth screening, even though there was a quite nice day planned around a screening a couple of weeks ago. That would tend to suggest that I didn't like it in the end, but I'm still a bit unsure.

You're trying too hard. Just relax and enjoy.

Original TOS fanatic - It was a "fun" movie. It was meant to be "fun." No reason to take it seriously as it was an alternate timeline. Liking it or disliking it will not affect my continued enjoyment of the original. Nor will anyone else's opinion of it, actually alter my DVD's of the original.

- Oddly enough, I read opinions that younger or more people liking it has to be a plus. How is that a plus for those who didn't like it? (A rise in popularity could only forebode more of what the disliker's didn't like).

- As to original viewing equipment... I watched the original in color (although it wasn't until around 1970 that I found out that Kirk himself wasn't supposed to be green).

You could see it as a plus because more new people liking the movie mean more people going to discover the original Trek, and those people might prefer the old Trek - like you do. The more people who like Trek in all its forms, means the more opinions go into influencing what future Trek shall be.

I thought it was an ok film.

Was not impressed by this incarnation of Kirk or Scotty. But ZQ did an ok job with Spock and Urban was great as Bones. It seemed to be definitely oriented towards the younger crowd who likes shoot 'em ups.

YES. A LOT.

I hated the new engine room/beer brewery and the stupid new hand phasers but dug most everything else.

In the end, I liked it.

I thought they managed to cover what I mostly thought was needed for a restart/reboot/reimagining.

The costumes looked like the classic design, but were also something new.
(The admiral's dress uniforms looked horrible, IMO.)
The Enterprise looked like the Enterprise.
The Klingon ships looked like Klingon ships, although that was fairly brief.

Most important, they seemed to get the characters and give something a little new as well.

Mind you, it could have been a better story with perhaps a little more intelligence behind it. Those plot holes shouldn't have to wait for a DVD release to plug them. The whole Kirk cadet to captain was a bit much to try to swallow, but I found some soda pop helped. ;)
