So Data's dead and Trip gets a second chance at ponfar?

Garm Bel Iblis

Commodore
So the powers that be decided since Trip's death was dumb so they retconned it and made him a Romulan spy, fighting behind the lines in Earth's efforts to combat the might of the Romulan Empire... Really? Trip? Trip Tucker? The southern yahoo from a series that no one watched and that very few respected unitl the last couple dozen episodes?

Meanwhile Data was blown into thalaron particles in the Baeson Rift for absolutely no reason. Saving the ship? How come he couldn't have just "attached" himself to Picard's transporter beam ala Gilian Taylor in STIV?

Data was the Spock of the TNG series, the most popular character. And he wasn't brought back the way the filmakers intended by creating B4 and doing the memory transfer int he first place! Data's in there and I want him back in the novels, not the fanwank Countdown Series of comics!

The fact that Data's dead and Trip's alive is very aggravating, considering how much change the Enterprise-E has gone through since Nemesis. It should not have been this way. Data should have been XO and Worf should have gone with the Titan, not using that dope Vale whom i cannot stand. Worf as Riker's Number One would have brought a fresh air to a stale command crew that encompasses Titan and it's "Great Decker Experiment."

While I do also wish Data would come back, I'm actually pretty happy with what we've gotten since Nem. I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually really like all of the GTTS-LTP TNG crew, with my favorites being Trys and Choudhury. Both of whom are IMO very unique characters, who have done alot to keep TNG interesting. I just really wish they would do more with Elfiki and Faur, both of whom have been little more than background characters in the books.
And I couldn't disagree with you more about Vale, she's been one of my favorite Trek Lit characters since I first came across her in Doors into Chaos.

I'm in that apparent minority with you, then. :) I'm also very fond of Trys and Choudhury; I find them both fascinating characters. And, unlike most, I really like Kadohata too.

I'm Kadohata fan too, and I'm really hoping she comes back. I thought it was interesting seeing a Starfleet officer who was a married parent that didn't have their family with them.

My only question is, are you going to boycott all the books until Data comes back and come complain here every six months or so?

I think the notion of Data's memories/whatever "taking over" B-4 is one of the most un-Star Trek like things to do with the character. Deliberately replacing the personality of one being with that of another? Setting aside the morality discussions to be had there, would Data even want that? Would he "agree" to it, were it to happen, or would he view it as a selfish, perhaps even "murderous" act? Those, to me at least, are questions worth exploring if that's the path to be taken. Countdown glosses over whatever happened, much to my disappointment (I don't know if there's any backstory on this provided in the Star Trek Online materials.).

Were it my decision to make, I'd have B-4 remain "himself," but with access to whatever portion of knowledge and memories Data transferred to him, to use as he made his way through his own life, on his own terms...for better or worse.

(And not to derail the thread, but in a similar vein, I wish the Voyager producers had taken the bolder path of keeping "Tuvix," even if it meant losing Tuvok and Neelix. That would've been ballsy, particularly coming as it would have at that point in the series, when fans had become invested in the characters. Oh, well.)

Just my $.02.

^ The Needs Of The Many has a pretty interesting story of how Data came back that I think you'd like, based on your post.

I understand the sentiment in wanting Data back, but IMHO his inclusion in the post-NEM TNG setting wouldn't have added too much.

As I see it, Data had completed his "character arc", and essentially experienced what it was to be human(-like). Not that that should be any reason to "kill" him, I just don't see all the storyline possibilites with him as XO of ENT-E.

Also, if Pocket Books decides to regard Countdown as official (and considering it's the *stated* prequel to STXI, it's quite possible IMO), Data's resurrection is just a matter of time..

You should have attached a poll and made this the "Bring Back Data" thread. I'd love to hear from crackpot Data obsessives :)

I'd like the novels to go the way of Countdown but ignore Star Trek Online. But I don't think it's likely despite the involvement of the movie writers' in the comic. As shown in the Wesley thread, the Enterprise relaunch and others the novels are getting away with ignoring/repurposing the intents of the TV/film source material quite a bit, let alone some tie-in comic. Sometimes it works out (Martin Madden would probably have been as interesting as a sedated Chakotay) and sometimes a big mess is made (rewriting a rubbish finale in an even worse way).

^ Just to clarify, the novels aren't "getting away" with anything. Everything's still being vetted by the CBS Licensing office, and if they had druthers about any particular direction for the stories to go, they'd make those desires/demands known just as they always have.

Doesn't make opinions about the end results of such endeavors any less valid, tho :)

I wouldn't mind if they brought Data back but I'm not cool with the idea of how they did it in the Countdown comic.

Regarding Kadohata, not a fan. I hope that she doesn't come back. To me she was boring. I didn't like how they retconned her into being a member of the Enterprise-D. I thought it was cheap way to establish the character instead of just showing her developing a relationship with the crew from the start.

To be honest, the only reason I bought Losing the Peace was because I read that she was leaving the series. The only two things that stood out about her, and the only reason they stood out was because they were mentioned in almost every scene she was in that she is Asian with an English accent and that she is a mother torn between her family and her duty. I kept thinking just make a decision darn it, and I'm glad that she decided to go with the family, at least for now.

^ Right, but DarKush was saying Kadohata was being torn between family and duty, and chose family. I just wanted to stress that she hadn't turned her back on duty.

Good point. From what we saw of Data's feelings (and yes, I think that's the right word no matter what hairs they split on the show) toward Lal, Lore, the exocomps, etc., he was very protective of other artificial life forms, especially "family."

True enough, but I'd like to think at least part of her decision was motivated by the idea that by her staying in one place, the gap between family and duty closes a bit. :)
