So, anyone here ready to declare this the best Star Trek film yet?

Yes because the reboot and better special effects are refreshing..and no because theres just to many cool concepts in the previous movies. Also at the end when spock comes on the ship at the last second and says oh ill be your first officer and kirk says ya sure why not id be honoured but hurry up we were just about to leave. As if it would have been like that and not decided beforehand.

Star Trek told it's best stories in the episodes. No question. NONE of the movies can break the top 20 episodes IMO. I'm talking ALL of Trek not just TOS.

As far as this new movie...
It's #4 for me right now. Wrath of Khan, First Contact and The Voyage Home are better. The Voyage Home may be the most 'Star Trek' of all the movies.
It could have easily been an episode.

That's where I think this new franchise will struggle. It needs to be able to tell "Star Trek" type stories. City on the Edge of Forever, The Inner Light, Measure of a Man, Duet, The Vistor ect.

I just don't see those type of stories coming out of this crew and that's a shame.

I definitely don't think this is the best Trek movie (I still love STII and STVI), but I found it to be the most exhilarating film to date. I definitely would put this in the top 3.

The scenes with the Kelvin to start the movie were among the most stunning and well done scenes in Trek history. The moments when Kirk was being born and how emotional Winona Kirk and George Kirk were amazing.

People who can't turn their fucking phone off for 2 hours during the movie has no business going to the cinema. Fucking assholes with no respect to others.

But they aren't worth getting all worked up over. Simply throw popcorn at them. Make it a national sport or something. :D

I agree that none of the films breaks into a Top 20 or so of all Trek episodes. Or no, I take that back. TVH does for me. Also agreed about your favorite episodes.

But as for those stories not coming from the new crew? That's a little premature to say and therefore unfair. This is going to be a film-only crew (if sequels happen). Stories like the ones you mention don't lend themselves to movies. And I think as a cast they got off to a great start here. A sequel unburdened by a "How they got together" plot might just end up even better. Who knows what they'll come up with?

As for a ranking, I don't want to do this after one viewing. Suffice it to say I thought the movie was great, a delight to watch through and through, and I was so busy soaking up every detail, every second of it that I feel there was three times more to see in this film that I could even register, fast-paced as it was. I wished for a remote control to pause the film and take time to process it all. I have had that feeling of watching a Star Trek film in a state of rapture four times before: During TMP, TWOK, TVH and TUC. It definitely joins these ranks, which is great company. Time and repeated viewings will tell where exactly it settles in that group.

In this entirely subjective matter...I say it IS the best Star Trek film ever made. My list:

1. STAR TREK
2. The Wrath of Khan
3. First Contact
4. The Voyage Home
5. Generations
6. The Search for Spock
7. The Undiscovered Country
8. Nemesis
9. The Motion Picture
10. The Final Frontier
11. Insurrection (Easily the WORST Star Trek movie ever made.)

LOL! Afraid so. =/
I had one of your type sitting in front of me as well.

I continuously threw popcorn at his head until he put his mobile phone away. And then I threw some more just for good measure. :D

I sat in the very back where no one could see me!

But even so, I only texted that one time. I'm so good at it, I don't even have to take my eyes of the screen!

You had no one beside you either?
