So, anyone here ready to declare this the best Star Trek film yet?

People who can't turn their fucking phone off for 2 hours during the movie has no business going to the cinema. Fucking assholes with no respect to others.

Someone could have set off a firecracker two rows behind me last night and I might not have noticed. I was in the movie, not the theater.

II suspect I'll think TWOK will have more to its story but ST 2009 will be fun to watch and will be more dynamic.

I think that TWOK does have a stronger (and simpler) narrative spine. I don't really think that alone is enough to make it the better movie.
That's precisely the debate I'm having right now. I consider narratives like TWOK's to be the perfect type of story -- strong, yet simple. However, even though I prefer TWOK's story to ST's, ST just did so many things right that it's going to be hard for me to not ultimately deem ST as the best Trek picture.

I'm gonna need a lot more viewings and a lot more time to determine ST09's place in the pantheon...right now I'd say, "Yes, it's the best!" but in fairness to the other films, I'd need to let the emotions of right now settle out as they have for the other films. Having said that, I'd have a hard time seeing it slip much lower than #2 or #3 best as compared to the other films...

For a Trek film, it was definitely way more enjoyable than the last few TNG movies. For a motion picture in general, it wasn't anything I would want to go out of my way to see again. And for an overall deconstruction of my childhood, It's a strange sensation being raped and wanked at the same time.

I need to see it again.. but its gotta be one of the top 2 or 3 in my book. TWOK has been my top film for a long time so I think its more of a time will tell thing... for me at least

That's a tough one. Part of the reason that I, and I suspect many others, love the older movies so much is because I've seen them so many times that they're like an old friend.

I'll probably have a better idea of where it falls in the list after a second viewing. Even after subsequent viewings though it will take a little while for its position to cement.

As of this moment though I would say it is the best.

Hell, I'll declare it -- BEST. STAR TREK. MOVIE. EVER.

Is it without fault? No, but it was a motion picture. Epic. Big. Genuine characterization and growth. Real stakes. Big risks.

Most of all, it was fun, something missing in Trek for a long time. It tapped into the excitement I felt when I was four-years old watching reruns of TOS. For me I always loved the action-adventure space opera aspect of Trek more than the sophistry and pseduo-intellectualism. Now I'm not bashing TOS or its descendants. In terms of treating it's audience with intellegence, Trek did that well, but I can see it for what it was and is without rose-colored specs.

Action.
Adventure.
Characters.
Space opera.
Star Trek.

For me it's a close 3-way tie between this, FC, and TWOK. but... I think I'm going to give it to Trek XI. Yes, it's the best Trek film ever.

The RT ratings bear this out so no flaming please.

It was brilliant. I love everything about it. I just bought the soundtrack. First Trek soundtrack I ever wanted to own.

...and Bob's your uncle.

I dunno about BEST, but for sure it was waaay up near the top of all the Trek films. I loved this movie, and really need to see it again, to soak in what I may have missed. My rankings:

1) TWOK
2) STAR TREK
3) FIRST CONTACT
4) THE VOYAGE HOME
5) TUC
6) STIII
7) TMP
8) GENERATIONS
9) NEMESIS
10) INSURRECTION
11) THE FINAL FRONTIER

This is the best film because it is the most couragous new step whilst at the same time marvellously retaining the flavour of star trek (well ok, in my opinion ;)).

But I'm very excited about the brand new universe our noble team have now to explore, in which anything could happen and fixing things with time travel is not allowed and so it will no doubt reveal deeper insights and evolution than traditional dogma would allow. i'm excited as if TOS is back and it will be 2009 relevant too.

And they will explore anew with style and boldness. Afterall, boldly seeking out new worlds is what its all about? I'm scared of change like many old trekkers, but star trek teaches that you have to embrace the new and let it test the merit of your case and see if it can stand up to it.

Because risk is our business - its what this starship is all about - its why we're aboard her! ;)
