So, anyone here ready to declare this the best Star Trek film yet?

Absolutely. Abrams, Orci, Kurtzman et al captured the beating heart of Star Trek; it is this movie.

I can't believe how right they got it! :guffaw:

I feel wonderful right now. Pure ecstasy. Those are tears of joy coming from that emoticon.

:techman: I'm hearing you steveman...

the floodgates of joy have burst wide open!!!
I know! I kept looking for an emoticon that best captured what I'm feeling right now, and the little green guy was it.

My heart is very full right now. Saccahrine, I know. But those are, plain and simple, my feelings toward this movie.

It was the best of Treks, it was the worst of Treks. It was a tale, told by some idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

But it was fun and it was charming.

I'd predicted that it would be a dumb (but not, I trusted, quite as dumb as, say, Star Wars, which I love) summer action film. But, done well, I could live with that--it's not the ideal, but I could live it.

So now that I've seen it, I find my prediction was spot-on: actually, it may well be a little dumber than Star Wars--the middle four, at least. But, as an example of a fun, dumb action flick, it's quite good and I enjoyed it--the best of Treks, if you will. As an example of Star Trek, it is awful, just awful, the worst of Treks, one might say. My colleague, another teacher where I work and a casual fan of the 24th century stuff primarily, absolutely loved it, however, and it cast a very pleasant penumbra over the drinks afterward.

It ain't Star Trek, though. In its own way, it is as much of a parody as Galaxy Quest. I like Galaxy Quest, but that ain't Star Trek, either.

It is totally Star Trek, right down to the main cast relationship, and positive future best.

Sorry, there were no stupid Jedi powers, no force, no Jar jar, no Ewoks, or Yoda, sensei pop philosophy. This was better and more clever than any of the Star Wars movies.

Action flick yes, but Star Trek was always adventurous...this one just more-so, and that's good.

Pine, who took on the role of Kirk, says the world today is in some ways very similar to how it was when the original "Star Trek" television series ran.
"The original series comes out in the late '60s during a time of social unrest and two wars, and then you look at the bridge of the Enterprise, and it's a veritable United Nations of colors, races and sexes," he said.
"I mean, all you have to do is look around the world, and we're trying to kill each other more often than not," Pine added. "What a wonderful thing to look at a bunch of people working together against one common enemy that's out there."

You know, I've seen treks 3-11 in theaters. There have only been 2 that I saw the audience cheering at the end of it. The first was the voyage home and now Star trek. I'd have to say gauging audience reaction that this movie will be considered over time to be in the top 2 and maybe the best because for those of us that remained spoiler free for the most part this wasn't anything that was expected. I think that this will also lead to a new line of novels and I really do think with this alternte reality we could see the return of Shatner as Kirk.

Here ya go...

The Best? Too early for me to tell after just one screening yesterday in a rather empty cinema. Plus need more viewings before I decide, if it's up to FC and TWOK.

It was damn good, best? I don't know if I would say that, but it was well worth the money and I will buy the DVD/Blu-ray.

I thought it a lot of ways it was more like TOS than the actual TOS-movies, the humor, the crazy locales and vistas and fistfights, and even its flaws ... so in that sense I thought it was great.

1. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
2. Star Trek
3. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
4. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
5. Star Trek: First Contact
6. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
7. Star Trek: Generations
8. Star Trek: Insurrection
9. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
10. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
11. Star Trek: Nemesis

But as Trek, the movie is a little odd; will there really be no Vulcan and no Romulus? Did I miss something? Hard to imagine Trek without them -- especially Vulcan. I suspended disbelief in "Countdown," hoping the movie would fix that.

Now I'm wondering if the next movie will fix it...
I doubt it. I'm really in mourning. My two favorite Trek races. :( No matter which timeline exists, one or the other is hosed.

I wish I had a dartboard. I want to throw darts at the pictures of Orci and Kurtzman. :vulcan: If you're reading this, *GRR!!!* Why couldn't you guys have picked on the Klingons? Or Andorians?

^ Because it wouldn't have ellcited that kind of emotional response! ;)

(Ducks chairs thrown by Klingon fans)

But the future of Vulcan is in good hands with Spock (Prime), Sarek, and the other elders.

actually they could work in the sequel that romulus and the federation reach out to each other.

from what little we hear in balance of terror the romulan empire is in an unsettled state.. there is talk the being involved in constant conflicts and the commander is already weary of war.

all of sudden the people we later learn that they still had affinity for are blown away by one of their own kind.

that kind of gobsmack can make the future interesting and may actually in the end save romulus in the future.

Nope. This one is "Search for Spock" or "The Final Frontier" level for me, though I really can't consider it a Trek movie.

No, not yet...in time, perhaps

This move is very jarring and disorienting...I really felt like I had been blasted into a parallel universe...not a bad thing, just really a radical new take...it will take time to get used to

Pine makes me forget about Shatner...I am so much more interested in Kirk now...but the others, while excellent, still need time to flesh out their roles

This is a fantastic movie, but I really hope that it can be viewed as a gateway...I appreciate the more time passes from seeing it, but I still think that the greatest Trek film is in the works :)

I'm only 19, but I've been a trekkie whole life, and I'd have to say this is the best Trek movie to date. Simply because of the fact that I actually felt for this movie and the characters.

Seriously, I cried when G. Kirk died.

If you cried for that, then what did you do when Amanda died?

After giving it some thought, I think my rankings from best to least best now are:

The Undiscovered Country
The Voyage Home
First Contact
The Wrath of Kahn
Star Trek (09)
The Final Frontier
The Search for Spock
Generations
Insurrection
The Motion Picture
Nemesis

Hmmm I haven't thought where it ranks so I'll do it right now.

1. TWOK
2. FC
3. TMP
4. Voyage Home
5. XI
6. Generations
7. UC
8. Nemesis
9. Insurrection
10. Search For Spock
11. Final Frontier

Wow I didn't expect to rate it that high. Considering I thought the film was only OK that doesn't say much for Trek films

It's too early for me to tell, but it's up there with my favourites 2,4,6 and 8. Time will tell. Also I completely buy Pine's Kirk which I wasn't expecting to such a degree. He seems fresh and relevant. Since I didn't come into Trek until 1996 that was always difficult for me. But wow, I really really love this movie, it's everything I could have hoped for.

0001) Star Trek: The Movie
0002) Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan
0003) Star Trek: The Motion Picture
0004) Star Trek: First Contact
0005) Star Trek: The Voyage Home
0006) Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country
0007) Star Trek: The Search For Spock
0008) Star Trek: The Final Frontier
0009) Star Trek: Insurrection
0010) Star Trek: Generations
0011) Star Trek: Nemesis

My 9 & 10 are interchangeable..., mostly cause I'm pissed that Kirk died so lamely and the SPFX on 10 kinda sucked.
