SNW Chapel seems to have all of TOS Uhura traits.

"Bouncing" is not a character trait. That' just how people can be. These are not disparities in characters. These are dynamic traits that can come and go within people in the course of their lives.

It's absurd at best.

In JJ Trek uhura sort of flirted back for some of their scenes together. she could handle kirk as she said in the bar. the way the movie set things up, it leds us to think kirk and uhura will be an item until they twisted it that it was spock and uhura that were the item and have maybe been an item even before she met kirk at that bar.

Bush is more like Lwaxana , true. Also you said jesh bush bounces, that was JJ Trek uhura too. lol. her first scene in the 2009 movie she bounces her way through the bar. She even bounces more than Jess Bush does because JJ Abrams was playing a Guitar number. Just more prove snw chapel is a redo of jj uhura.

Pine is a better Kirk than Wesley by light years and by star trek beyond, Pine was becoming like Shatner. However I credit this more to Pine just been a better actor than Paul Wesley.

Pegg has some of AOS Kirk but sometimes it goes a little into parody.
JJ Uhura actually had story elements of TOS Uhura, Rand, and Chapel smooshed into one character because JJ Abrams version of Trek was broadly quite sexist and he didn't have much time for the female characters except insofar as how their presence (or lack thereof) impacted the men. We had no Number One, no T'Pau, Amanda's death, Winona's absentee parenting, no Rand, and Chapel only a cameo. So I think you should accept your justifiable love for Saldana's Uhura, park it, and focus on the version from the Prime universe, because that's who these actors are playing. SNW Uhura hasn't event graduated yet and she is on a journey to become TOS Uhura, just as SNW Chapel is on a journey to become TMP Dr Chapel.

As we all have heard now, The great graceful Nichelle Nichols has passed. This was big headline news around the world and it made me watch a lot of Uhura stuff, from the JJ Movies, to documentaries and many tribute videos to Uhura. I could not help but notice that the Uhura people seem to talk about in TOS does exist in SNW but she is in the body of Christine Chapel.

Many fans, actors , politicians and pop culture pundits seem to have loved Nichelle Uhura because of how confident, smart, ground-breaking, graceful, flirty and charismatic she was on the show that she could not be resisted by anyone. she was a woman in the midst of men in the 60s and she more than held her own , earning their respect and more. Uhura is an iconic character. period.

The legacy of TOS Uhura, I had no idea was that big. it was only until last week I saw all the tributes pour in even from the freaking president of the united states Joe Biden and i did my research that i just realized how big her legacy was. it just makes no sense to me now that a lot of the uhura traits from TOS is now been said about SNW Chapel and that also includes a romance with Spock.

Me watching TOS, and watching spock/chapel as well as spock/uhura scenes. Spock just never like Chapel. there is no way to spin it. he never liked her. Spock liking Chapel is like trying to argue that Rachel liked Gunther from Friends. it was a unrequited crush. Additionally Gunther was no Ross or Joey in terms of been a babe magnet, that was always Uhura. This is why if you watch TOS . Kirk , Spock, Sulu and many other male characters seem to show attraction or at least admire Uhura's at some point in the show even if it was under some influence, but I guess this was the only way they could do with with a black female character because the 60s were still dark times. That was wrong, but it was the 60s. I also recall President Lincoln did call Uhura charming.

While Nichelle Nichols Uhura was limited. they made her just answer phone but somehow Uhura always managed to still steal the show as the go to female character. a common tribute you see a lot with Nichelle Nichols. I swear at this point, the way people talk about TOS Uhura, you would not even know Chapel or even Rand was ever in TOS. why we now have SNW where they have swapped TOS Uhura in SNW Chapel just feel kind of disrespectful to Nichelle's legacy.

SNW Chapel had her shot to be with Spock in TOS and he rejected her. Uhura was never given the same shot. SNW writers should have gone with that if they cared so much about correcting the wrongs of the 1960s.

In my re-watch on Charlie X. I liked that Nimoy seem so into Nichelle that he broke character. when spock smiled at the end, that was Nimoy not Spock. this was the effect Nichelle Uhura had on people and has been said in many of the tributes even by William Shatner who is an ego manic. I cannot help but notice, it looks like some tributes paid to Nichelle, some in the star trek acting family may be taking silent diss digs at SNW or Nu Trek in general when they paid tributes Nichelle.

So RIP Nichelle Nichols for been such an outstanding light and making Uhura very iconic, it is a shame that SNW has now given all your personality and traits not to your younger self in SNW but to Christine Chapel, Hopefully as time goes by in SNW. the creators and writers will begin to fix this bad error and even explore a paring that they denied us in the 1960s due to racism

SNW please just be an alternate reality instead.

What a lot of effort to go to just to end up being wrong.

To Valden:

Pro-tip, when two peopla are asked to stop and one doesn't, the one will draw a warning. You have a warning for spamming.

I'm getting real tired of your obsession or schtick or whatever the heck it is. Drop it before I decide to drop you.

Don't bother PMing me. Just LISTEN to what I've said.

Not really. If you look at Obsession and Amok Time, and maybe For the World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky, you will see which crumbs Jess Bush relied upon to flesh out Chapel. She's a bit too in your face when working to assist M'Benga IMO but otherwise she's just injecting Chapel's personality into every episode rather than just occasionally.

Uhura meanwhile, is younger, a teenager in her formative years but you can see where she's headed.

Far from being disrespectful I think it's a wonderful homage to Nichelle.

Now, the way they treated Chapel in the JJ movies was disrespectful, dismissing her off camera as a discarded booty call, coming as it did so close to Majel's death.

They said at the time that they didn't include Chapel and Rand because they couldn't think of anything to do with them but SNW has shown that was sexist bs.
Perhaps she goes the way of Marcus with Kirk's bun in the oven.

She's stated to be a civilian in SNW but Roddenberry said she was a brevet in TOS. So it looks like she used her past experience to sign up to Starfleet at the last minute. Maybe Pike pulled some strings.
Are those two rank stripes on her costume?

Spock was uncomfortable around Chapel for unspecified reasons. In Amok Time he's difficult with Kirk and gentle with her, wiping tears from her face. That is not dislike.

Actually deconstruction is what is the ideal though poor way of writing new show this days…

Ummm, valden, these tirades are really getting tiresome. Everyone is entitled to their personal beefs about the writing of certain characters, and when taken by itself, one tirade like this is not against the rules of the board, but…

When taken as part of a collection of posts - that always seem to come back to the same obsession re SNW’s Christine Chapel's outgoing behavior and sexuality as compared to Uhura - your posts become trollish and/or spammy, and they invariably derail every thread the rants are posted in.

Please, can we cool it?

Your opinions are not going to change the writing of SNW, and neither are mine. I am enjoying both characters and both actors very much.

@valden

A cursory fact check might help people to engage with you more meaningfully.

James Cameron did not direct Alien. Patrick Stewart was far, far from being an A-Lister when he took omn TNG. As I recall, he was moonlighting as a used car salesman in the mid-80s.

It's not that you express your opinions I think. It's that you back them up with so-called evidence that is itself inaccurate.

You like TOS. Me too. That's great and you could discuss that over in the TOS forum rather than making yourself miserable in here.

I think both characters work well within the Strange New Worlds format. Gooding and Bush are not Nichols and Barrett, nor do they need to be. I want them to be interesting in the here-and-now, not constrained by a show that hasn't aired for fifty years.

What a wild post. lmao.

anyway, TOS Chapel was in love with Spock, and he implied more than once to reciprocate it. The "Uhura and Spock were soooo in love" is made up fiction from Abrams lovers.

Chapel does not act anything like Uhura.

the ACTUAL character of Uhura on this show acts like Uhura.

Now it is my turn to lol:lol: as I do all the time when I am misquoted. Correction I never said Spock and Uhura were in love in TOS. I said they had potential to be a couple and Nimoy and Nichols had a good rapport with each other compared to Nimoy and Majel. things were different in the 60s because it was still taboo to show a stable romance between black and white people on tv. However the few scenes we got from spock and uhura in tos, gave them more potential than spock and chapel that always did play out as a crush on Chapel's part alone. Spock never reciprocate it, that was part of the running but painful joke of Chapel's character in TOS.

A lot of the body language here between spock and uhura in TOS shows a very playful side, we have yet to see in SNW, So it is not like I am making it up. Here is proof.

To add more to this, it feels as if there are now more deleted scenes of Nimoy and Nichelle that I doubt can be argued Abrams fans made things up in their heads if spock and uhura had a thing for eachother.

Wonder why they cut all this scenes out in TOS. It was bad enough Nichelle sometimes felt depressed on the show and wanted to leave because she was not been given enough until Martin Luther King convinced her to stay but they still cut some good scene like these two.

So there, I have given good substance for spock/uhura as a potential couple in TOS that was perhaps limited by the times of the 60s. It should debunk any theory it was an Abrams fantasy.

Moving on to your other point, In TOS Spock had many chances to show feelings for chapel even under some influence but it never happened. when he had a chance to show feelings for a woman, it was with Leia Kemoni and he showed real feelings for Zarabeth in all our yersterdays. those were the only two women in TOS , Spock had real romantic affection for at some point not Chapel.

Uhura was never giving a real fair chance for us to tell if he would have had feelings for her due to the racism of the 60s. Even her kiss with Kirk has kind of aged poorly because they only kiss because they were brain washed. interracial romance/teasing was still that limited that it needed some explanation why different races need to kiss.

Also you do also know that in that episode it was Spock and Uhura that was meant to kiss until Shatner said he wanted to kiss Uhura to make history as the official first interracial kiss. A story Nichelle has confirmed.

Now imagine if spock and uhura had been the two characters that kissed as originally planned. I doubt there will be any debate that it is abrams lovers pushing a theory. Abrams lovers never had to push things. Abrams saw some of the few dynamics of TOS with spock and uhura and gave them a shot to be a couple in an alternate reality that did not hurt prime canon.

Lastly I am no huge Abrams lover, although star trek 2009 is one of the best sci fi of its era, It had some flaws I did not like and thought were jarring like Kirk going from suspended cadet to captain, However SNW has some bigger flaws and some bigger shortcomings than star trek 2009.

If you want to know how I feel about Abrams Trek in general, I think star trek beyond is the best star trek of the modern era because it has neither of some of JJ Abrams directing issues and at the same time does not go into CW quality kind of star trek like SNW, Discovery or Picard seem to be doing. JJ served as a producer only in Star Trek Beyond.

I agree that there was plenty of flirting going on between Uhura and Spock in early TOS and it's a shame that those scenes didn't make it in. Certainly the way she dresses him down in Man Trap has shades of NuTrek's Spuhura. I think with Chapel, he DOES have feelings for her but they are human feelings. His Vulcan side doesn't see her as a logical mate.

Leila was originally Sulu's lost love so don't read too much into that.

I like to think that when Spock and Chapel finally mind meld or rather when she holds his katra, they learn enough about each other to reach a new understanding. She then is inspired to complete training as a medical doctor.
