It was a good episode, but I also agree it was sort of pedestrian. It felt like an episode from season's past rather than this season, which has been much stronger. I really liked the first half though, it was interesting and fun seeing the Legion mark out over Clark. the 2nd half felt meh with the sudden and quick wrapup of the Chloe and Braniac plot.

Awaiting Doomsday.

It was kinda sloppy--a real let down. After all the hype I was expecting more. There were several glaring plot holes. Some of which, I'm still not sure about. The acting by the Legion-folk was down right awful. And the plot just seemed haphazardly thrown together. For one thing, I think this would have worked better as a two-parter. It was definitely the worst episode of the season.

I couldn't agree more. And I LOVED that she told Clark that doing the right thign would be to kill her.

Except that's not Superman. In fact, Clark acted the most Supes-like in this episode than he ever has in the show. It was one of the few parts of the episode got right.

Yes, I know that's superman an who he is. That doesn't mean I have to like that aspect of Superman. I don't want the good guy to win all the time. The vast majority of the time, yes, but not all the time. Decisions like those should have repurcussions because it's not always gonna go your way. Unfortunately it's the comics where it almost always does, especially when it coems to main characters. I want to see this decision come back to bite Clark in the ass and cost other people their life.

^
So then why a Superman fan? He his the ultimate white hat of the 20th century. That's how he's always been and always will be.

Comic books are the mythological fairy tales of this era. All comic book heroes (Yes, even the Marvel ones.) are "white hats." Except, Supes reigns supreme and is at the very top of that list.

He is the quintessential do-gooder and beacon of light and hope. There is no middle ground or shades of gray with him. Every other comic hero, from Bats to Manhunter to Captain America to Spidey, has some wiggle room, but not Superman. He is the truest of the true.

And, anytime someone has tried to change that, it's been recieved very negitivly. People like him just the way he is. He is a pillar of hope, not just in his fictional universe, but in the real one as well. People like that.

People like that, while it is true things never go "your way" and decisions have "repurcussions," they don't for Superman. In the end he always finds a way to do the right thing. That's what makes him Superman and that's why he brings hope.

That was the point of the Superman movie, and that was the point of the episode. And, as I said, it was one of the few things it got right.

Strong episode. Though it would have been nice for the Legion's appearance to be in a stand alone episode. Its hard to ever believe that Brainiac is really gone forever.

Glad to see some of the spoilers were wrong. Superman did not send the Legion. This is their first time meeting Kal-El. Most of their reactions to him are on how he lives up to expectations based on history.

I wonder if the spectacular future destiny the Legion referred to for Lana concerns her role as the Insect Queen.

Looking very forward to seeing Lana transformed into a half-insect FREAK. It's really almost poetic, considering what a general PEST she is. I just hope Clark destroys the bio-ring while she is transformed, leaving her trapped permanently as a horrible monster. If it's good enough for the inside, it's good enough for the outside.

I liked it. Plenty of fun, fannish references to Legion history: the Subs, Garth's sister, the Time Institute, Brainiac 5, etc. Plus Allison Mack was nicely creepy as Brainiac.

And, via the Legion, they finally addressed the question we've all been wondering for years. Why is there no "Chloe Sullivan" in Superman's future?

Alas, I fear she's a goner before the series wraps up.

I hope not. It's the obvious result. It's also the one that's easiest to write. It seems like the new PTB are trying to show they're a little more creative. This would be a good opportunity to prove it.

They could take what has become an obnoxious trend lately and just have her make some sacrifice which wipes her from time entirely as if she never existed.

Allison was amazing in the episode. Kristin wasn't bad either. If only this had been the Lana Lang we had seen for all these years. I also loved the inside jokes.

^^Or maybe she winds up using Clark's Legion ring to go into the 31st century and joins the Legion herself? Now that all the Brainiac tech is out of her, her healing powers should be back after all.

She should find out very soon if they are or not, given she is going to her new husband's hospital bedside. One would think the first thing she'd do is to try to heal him.

Clark could use it leave in the season finale. He'll spend 3 months(summer hiatus) in the 31st century.

Or he gives the ring to Kara

Well I keep thinking that Chloe either a) Just becomes known as Chloe Olsen and leaves Metropolis after divorcing Jimmy and sorta doesn't stick around for the 'Superman' era. b) Has a falling out with Clark after he starts dating Lois. c) She goes to the 31st Century d) she gets stuck in the Bottle City of Kandor.

Or... they retcon her into the Superman mythology and be done with it! I like Chloe more than Lois honestly.

Late again and have skipped most of the discussion but my god that was a fucking awesome episode and worth the wait! Allison was hot and made an excellent possessed Brainiac host...some of the best acting she's done on the show ever IMO. All I have to say about the legionaires is LONG LIVE THE FUCKING LEGION! They should have done the Legion years ago! I know that I along with a few others have suggested it in the past and at risk for being mocked for my Geoff Johns mancrush...they need to bring them back for another episode and have Geoff write the episode! Loved the Legion scenes, and I seriously want a Legion ring now! I also wanted Clark to use his to fly but as Garth quiped...No Flights, No Tights! Loved how Rokk stopped him from saying Superman! I picked out a few nods to Geoff's run in Brainiac and the Legion of Superheroes as well. The Presuader seemed irrelevent unless it was planned that way. Rokk putting the time ring on him sending him back seemed too easy. I really hope we seem them again but maybe that is hoping for too much. The less Lana we have the better off the show will be. My friend and I laughed when she thought Imra was a meoter freak...that was good. I guess the bald dude with the tubes is not Brainiac then...

This episode was superior to "Justice". In which all the characters did was basically blow up a building and did a power walk! While Clark watched from the sides.

I thought the climax of extracting Brainiac from Chloe was very effective. Too often Smallville episodes have very weak climaxes. Partially due to ongoing storyarcs that just go on and on and on...
But also to individual episodes having buildups and then it all ends with a punch or two thrown by Clark.

I have long noticed how the level of visual effects on this show is very inconsistent. The effects for the Legion's powers were very good. But that establishing shot of the Fortress, the one they usually reuse, was awful! It had no sense of scale. No details or shadows. The arctic background was static with no wind or moving snow.

The establishing shot of the Fortress was most likely a stock shot from earlier in the season and yes I agree there isn't much scale to it. Although there was a darkish glint on the crystaline structure on the exterior...and I too liked how they visualized the Legionaires powers. This has usurped "Justice" as my all time favourite Smallville episode and has kicked off the second half of season eight just as I thought it would. I'm anxious now to see who bald dude is, how Clark will deal with Doomsday. Rokk's warning at the end of the episode was obvious.

I'm anxious now to see who bald dude is,

Its obviously Lex! In the recap they edited it so that the footage of the bald stand-in had Lex's name dubbed over the top. Being said by Oliver or Lana. Can't remember which? Its a way of keeping his presence in the show but in the background.
