Because originally it was supposed to be a mechanical security system of some sort, with the smoke being a side effect of the machinery? And that there's a bunch of industrial sites in the Bronx, maybe?
Why would the smoke monster randomly tear up trees and toss them around, too? Why did it act without any sign of intelligence or conscious early on, but now prefers playing with people's head?

It had very industrial sounds in the mix - steam-whistle, screetching brakes (train?) It also sounded like it could be an elephant trumpeting, so I was thinking, Bronx Zoo?

To me it sounds more like the metallic "clicking" you hear on a roller coaster as the ride brings the cars up to the top of the very first hill.

I understand you perfectly. If MIB "played" Isabella when Richard first got on the island, at least we know he had shifting abilities early on. I believe we will get an episode soon with MIB's backstory.
I don't think he left behind his 19th century body when appearing as other people, not permanently. He just chose to look like people that were known to those he was trying to manipulate. Because it would make the targets more pliable to hear those words from the mouths of loved ones.
But based on what Ilana said about him now being stuck in one corporeal form, something must have happened with Jacob's death, some island failsafe kicked in to "Locke" him into it.

An explanation of the Walt character in general would have been nice. They built him up to be so important and did nothing with him. The fact that the actor grew up is no excuse whatsoever. They knew that the show only took place during a short amount of time (the island story in the first four seasons was about 108 days I believe) yet they casted a child for the role. Unlike Gary Coleman, he was a non-freak and grew like most kids do. Yet they decided not to take this into account when they talked about how special he was and did nothing with him. Really bad job by the writers here. If the actor growing was going to effect the serialized nature of the show then they shouldn't have spent so much time telling us how special he was and never deliver on it.

That too - but then Rose should have said she was from Coney Island.
Here's what I want them to address: Kate said she was awake for the entire plane crash. So what exactly did she see/experience? I figure there's one of two explanations for so many people surivving: either the island shielded them from injury (not by slowing down the plane, because we saw the tail section hit at top speed, but maybe by a force field around selected people?) or the island resurrected/healed the mortal injuries of people immediately after they hit.
That's why I always thought that probability manipulation had something to do with the Island's mysteries. That many people could survive a plane crash uninjured. It's just very, very improbable. Just like Hurley winning the lottery. Or so many people who are connected in some way being on the plane in the first place. All of it could happen, it's just very, very improbable. So if the "Island" somehow could alter probabilities then impossible things could happen.
But I guess that is not the case.
I guess the answer is they were "fated" to survive the crash. It was their "destiny".
