Boy Wonder
Lieutenant
Hi, I don't quite get why everyone is so worked up about all this. Everyone seems to criticise beltran for what he's said, but he's talking about writers and producers he actually knew and worked with. Your all saying this is wrong and yet your bitching about a guy none of you even know. So whos worse??
Firstly, Beltran did have some legitimate grievances with the level of quality in writing. However, like I have said before, you either shut up or talk to the writers. No point screaming at us the people that watch it because we cannot do anything. It's career suicide.
Secondly, if these claims by Beltran held any water then he knew what sort of ride he was in for after season one when the Maquis conflict was abandoned and he only got a few episodes dedicated to his character here and there. About two per season. That trend was long established before Jeri Ryan joined. Yes his genereal fluff screen time was drastically cut, but it made no difference as it was just pointless meandering filler.
The writers didn't know what to do with him from virtually day one. An american indian that is spiritual. Did he honestly think his character would become the focus or get a decent amount of screentime. Star Trek doesn't delve into religion and they certainly don't know how to write for token ethnic characters.
All Beltran had to do was look at past series of Star Trek and realise they only ever concentrated on a few characters (Kirk, Bones, Spock/Data, Worf, Picard, Sisko, Odo, Kira) combined that with the fact that he is a poor actor with a woeful character, it's not surprising his screen time was cut.
I know that, but what, can't Mulgrew deal with the fact that a very attractive women who flaunted her assets could also act as well?
Mulgrew did acknowledge that Ryan was a talented actress in her interviews. It wasn't Ryan that bothered her but the attitude of the network suits.
But she still took her frustration out on Jeri by all accounts when it wasn't her fault.
