The ship was designed with features for one size and during production somebody decided to super size it without editing the esisting features.
...a tradition that dates to the original Enterprise

So the Enterprise changing sizes is canon!
Now it seems I'll have some reading to do. Does anybody know if there's been any word of Church yet about the dimensions?
Just for fun, I put together this comparison between the NuEnterpise & Kelvin. I made the docking ports the same relative size between the two.
I did a guesstimate of 7ft, based on the closeup shot of the Kelvin in the opening sequence.
Based on that ratio, the NuE got even smaller now - 1385ft!
(Though I think 1500ft is a good compromise)

No matter how you scale it, this looks to be a good relative size between the two ships.

Well, that doesn't mean they have anything in common. The Kelvin is at least 20 odd years older than the Enterprise-chances are in that time some details will have changed.Assuming the airlocks are the same between the ships is like assuming the deflectors are the same.

No it's not. Those hatches have a specific function which dictates a specific size. If you change the size of the deflector dish, nothing else changes. If you change the size of the airlock, suddenly all the docking ports on spacestations and shuttlecraft are useless. In fact, personnel hatches like that are probably the one thing you can guarantee will always be interchangeable on starfleet ships, because it'd be too much trouble to change them, and there's no possible reason to do so.
The airlock argument is pretty good... or highly problematic, if you are an ILM guy.
Of course they can just say, "Screw that, Starfleet has fifteen different types of airlocks."
Consider-the docking ports used on Apollo spacecraft are not the same as ones used on the ISS or space shuttle.
Seeing also as Starfleet doesn't use money to determine resource allocation, expense is no longer a barrier to upgrading technology.
I don't know if anyone had put this link in or if it works? But they tell you the size of the Enterprise.
