I don't care about her size, but the Enterprise's hangar finally looks practical and functional.
I love that shot.

I'll agree about the hangar, but the size doesn't make me happy. :p

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I'd like to think the new one is ~ 900 meters. :D And the TOS and TMP versions as well.

I've always thought the original sizes for the ships were too small. Seriously, how could 430 people live *and* work on a ship 280m long, 111m wide, in the configuration of the Constitution class? If it was all one piece, I'd say yeah, entirely possible, but with a saucer-can setup there's nowhere for supplies, spare parts, machinery, work space, guests... You see where I'm going with this. 900+m works *much* better.

Exactly, I completely and totally agree with you.

It's not just workstations and labs and private quarters. Even if you bunk them all up, they still need room for facilities. They need quite a lot of room for consumables, or at least base matter for the resequencers. There needs to be room for water. Every part of machinery should have at least one spare, preferably more. There needs to be room for evacuees (thus not all quarters should be taken all the time). There needs to be room for distinguished guests. Room for shuttles. And room to service those shuttles. Room to armories and torpedo bays. All sorts of stuff.

Remember, it's an exploratory ship. It's gotta do without a starbase for quite a long time, in the middle of no man's land. It should be self-sufficient for at least how long it's mission is supposed to last.

Now, if we'd all have shrinked ourselves in the future to be 50cm tall on the other hand, the old length might just work...

The main thing is they don't have replicators yet. Or at least, we assume they don't. Because, when you have power to spare, you can create everything at exactly the right moment you need it. That should definately save a lot of space in the future. So actually, the 24th century vessels should be smaller, not larger.
Totaly Agree!:D

I'm ''sorta'' with you there Preator, I like the idea of the ship being BIGGER then the original, say EXCELSIOR size, but 900m is a bit MUCH! so was shat right about there being 76 decks now?

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I don't think that the new E felt much bigger than the Refit. Maybe Excelsior-sized, but no larger. When the shuttle exited the hangar doors, it appeared to take up much of the available space, just as the shuttles did in TOS when they exited the bay.

Remember, we ARE talking about IL "Scale? What is 'scale'?"M here...

Could someone tell me just where the heck all these new screencaps are coming from?

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

the nuE has a crew complement of 1100 according to the official site. the E-D had a total of 1,014 people on board; crew AND civilian dependents/bar staff. logically, the nuE has got to be at least E-D size if not bigger.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

So the Galaxy maxes sense at 640-odd meters since it has the power resources to feed everyone on board and then some and repair itself nearly indefinately. The Constitution really should be *at least* 900m to do the job she was designed to do.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Neither is the 947' classic Connie, nor the 305m TMP Connie, but since that information comes from production sources it counts and is accepted.

This is no different.

And I don't care.

This is the kind of thing that killed the franchise in the first place: this anal-retentive obsession with pointless detail.

Anal-retentive obsession is what kept the franchise GOING for so long.

BAD WRITING killed franchise.
Good point.

Still that's one HELLOFABIGSHIP!! 900m? WOW now were getting in to BABYLON 5 territory as far as the MILE LONG ''or'' HALF MILE LONG ships are concerned.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I also favor the smaller ship for this reason. It only took about a minutes for Pike, Kirk, Sulu, and Spock to walk from the top part of the ship to where the shuttle crafts are. It seems to me the turbo lifts in this one just go straight down, now granted that I have no proof of this, but it wouldn't take seconds to walk from one end of a ship to another if the ship were as big as some of you say.

And how big do you think the U.S.S. Nimitz is given its crew complement of 2115? I think there's room to fudge things a bit.

Any culture with the technology to throw Newton's laws out the window has the capability of building turbolifts that would put Otis to shame.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Wow. Well, I guess that settles it, Professor.

I think it's dumb as Rocky Mountain oysters, but ... whatever.
