Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Seriously, people need to stop using that early Ex-Astris image for reference. Start using TobiasRichter's model.

Here:

Now, could someone please scale this down so that the airlocks match the TMP one.
End of discussion.

Have you got access to the rest of the ortho views of that model?

Also, there ARE official stats out for the new Big E.

They can be found on the "interactive tour" site you have to have a webcam and the special picture to access.

From memory, she's 2500' long, 1100' wide at the saucer, and 645' tall.

This is slightly smaller than what the FX people said in an interview, pegging her at 3000' long.

Way back when the first teaser trailer came out, I was AFAIK the first to spot how HUGE she was. I could see the decks in the saucer rim in some of the stills.

My first back of envelope calcs put her at 3085' long, and I was eventually talked into putting her at about 80% of that, which works out to ~2500', so I was close. I just didn't get the proportions right, as I'd assumed she shared the same as the original Connie. (At that time, all we had was the bow shot.)

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I would suggest that the scene where Pike's shuttle leaves the shuttlebay be analysed 'cause you can get a pretty nice impression of the size of the Ent there... which I estimate to be around the original.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Neither is the 947' classic Connie, nor the 305m TMP Connie, but since that information comes from production sources it counts and is accepted.

This is no different.

And I don't care.

This is the kind of thing that killed the franchise in the first place: this anal-retentive obsession with pointless detail.

Sure, it's nice if everything fits nice and tidy. But it's not so nice when the quality of storytelling is meassured against this stuff.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

^No one is giving OR taking anything from the movie based on the size of the ship....we're just debating it as a side issue...

Lighten up a bit, ST-One!

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I don't think that the new E felt much bigger than the Refit. Maybe Excelsior-sized, but no larger. When the shuttle exited the hangar doors, it appeared to take up much of the available space, just as the shuttles did in TOS when they exited the bay.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I like the idea that the Enterprise's size and specs were increased from the original. It helps to keep them separate. Maybe it is an entirely different class of ship even - perhaps the vessel that was to be Enterprise was renamed Kelvin in this timeline or something along those lines. We just don't know, but to me it just helps to show the changes in the timeline which I like.

You're absolutely right ST-One. So stop being so anal retentive and accept that official sources say she's half a mile long. ;):D

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Where is this mentioned?

'The making of Star Trek', 1968, written by Stephen Whitfield & Gene Roddenberry.

I've got a slightly tattered soft cover copy. Its more than 400 pages long!

Original Enterprise:

Overall length: 947 feet.

Disc diameter: 417 feet.

Secondary hull length: 340 feet.

Warp nacelle length: 504 feet.

Cheers

These aren't canon. Thank you for playing.

I too like how the shuttle bay looks. Finally the Enterprise has more than 2 shuttles to use. Makes the damned think look practical now.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I measured out 280 meters once and thought it would truly suck to be crammed in that kind of space with 429 other people for 5 years, so I'm glad they made it bigger. HOWEVER, if the crew figures to be 1100 now, it will still suck less than the old ship, but it's still not roomy if everyone's crammed into just the saucer. Assuming the secondary hull is only for the shuttlebay and enginneering.

:D

I guess I should apologize a bit... I was quite pissed because of that really 'objective' review a certain poster with quite the warped mind wrote in the TOS-subforum, and how I'm lectured at Foundation3D about how to correctly conduct a discussion there...

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I'd like to think the new one is ~ 900 meters. :D And the TOS and TMP versions as well.

I've always thought the original sizes for the ships were too small. Seriously, how could 430 people live *and* work on a ship 280m long, 111m wide, in the configuration of the Constitution class? If it was all one piece, I'd say yeah, entirely possible, but with a saucer-can setup there's nowhere for supplies, spare parts, machinery, work space, guests... You see where I'm going with this. 900+m works *much* better.

Anal-retentive obsession is what kept the franchise GOING for so long.

BAD WRITING killed franchise.

Exactly, I completely and totally agree with you.

It's not just workstations and labs and private quarters. Even if you bunk them all up, they still need room for facilities. They need quite a lot of room for consumables, or at least base matter for the resequencers. There needs to be room for water. Every part of machinery should have at least one spare, preferably more. There needs to be room for evacuees (thus not all quarters should be taken all the time). There needs to be room for distinguished guests. Room for shuttles. And room to service those shuttles. Room to armories and torpedo bays. All sorts of stuff.

Remember, it's an exploratory ship. It's gotta do without a starbase for quite a long time, in the middle of no man's land. It should be self-sufficient for at least how long it's mission is supposed to last.

Now, if we'd all have shrinked ourselves in the future to be 50cm tall on the other hand, the old length might just work...

The main thing is they don't have replicators yet. Or at least, we assume they don't. Because, when you have power to spare, you can create everything at exactly the right moment you need it. That should definately save a lot of space in the future. So actually, the 24th century vessels should be smaller, not larger.
