Size Of The New Enterprise (large images)

I just watched the film for the first time this afternoon- keeping in mind the size/scale issues mentioned online here and other threads.
The ship changes size from shot to shot-while it seems to be much larger than the classic TOS & refit, I didn't ever get the impression it was theh size of a Galaxy class. The shuttle bay is larger that the refits, but not that much larger. I get the clear impression it was designed to be maybe a third larger that the reit, but when they filmed it they played with th esize to make a bigger impression on screen.
They did the same thing in Star Trek 3 with e Merchantnan and the first glimpse of the Klingon BOP-You first se e the MM with windoes and other scale clues, then the KBOP decloaks and is the size of the D-7. They wanted to make a big first impression and took some liberties to do so.

I highly doubt that was an airlock. Considering the airlock, then, wouldn't have a radius much larger than the escape pod's which wasn't large enough to support a standing person. Unless it was a jefferies tube airlock. ;)

It was probably just an escape pod port.

Well, we only saw part of the escape pod imbedded in the ice. I figured it was probably about travel-pod sized with the extra space containing thrusters, some survival gear and a so on. I'm also not completely convinced it was an escape pod.

From the looks of it, they were VERY snug in there.

Not in the least. The hangar deck is cavernous:

That shuttle looks large because it's closer to the camera, that's all. It's called "perspective."

You pictures nice and all... but you missed pointing the the upper rows of shuttles...
there are 14; 7 on a side up there also...

Reasons it is an escape pod:
- stocked with survival gear (parka, heavy boots, etc.)
- pod tells Kirk conditions not safe outside

That doesn't necessarily make it an ESCAPE pod, especially since deploying them one at a time through a three meter hatch would be a very inefficient way to evacuate a starship.

I actually figured it's some kind of breaching pod reentry capsule that would usually be used to drop a dozen armed officers to a planet where beaming isn't effective (sort of your high-velocity version of that space jump gear). The computer did say something about "remain in your pod until proper authorities can be contacted" so it was probably programmed with the information that its occupant was a prisoner and was supposed to be picked up and arrested.

It is possible, but since I am always right and you (compared to me) are always wrong... it's an escape pod. :guffaw:Just kidding... you have a valid point, although the simpler answer (IMO) is a single person escape pod, as opposed to, a multi-person escape pod (as shown on the Kelvin).

Maybe some areas that are more difficult to get out from have these individual escape pods. Like people who work in the darkest deepest depths of the ship (graduate students, theoretical physicists, computer geeks), you know, our kind. ;)

To be honest, it seems to be almost exactly twice as large as the refit shuttlebay, considering the new shuttles aren't that much larger than the STV shuttles. Compare, for example, to the screencaps from TFF:

Even the TFF shuttlebay was ALMOST high enough to stack them in two levels, but only wide enough to fit them side by side. This shuttlebay is wide enough for them to turn sideways and tall enough to stack them with some room to spare.

It's a pretty crappy shuttlebay, too. Having those huge trusses right in the flight path isn't very smart, if you ask me.

Well, lets see somebody make a 3D model of it to get a better scale for the size of the whole ship.
:eek:HOLY FRAK! THAT THINGS HUGE! And are there any people on that deck, to give us an idea of scale?

I would say the NU shuttle bay maybe 3 times larger then the refit.

That's ONE reason why they will have to refit this baby!
