Since Kirk is on the show perhaps we can get more backstory on the Tarsus IV incident...

La'an was going on sabbatical and Una got arrested. I suspect the sabbatical will be over by the time S2 starts, or shortly thereafter, and getting Una out of the brig and hot water will be the overarching story of the first two to three eps of the second season.

Oh yeah, I forgot about La'an after "All Those Who Wander".

Still, the mere fact that she was back and serving aboard the Farragut in "A Quality of Mercy" does seem to suggest that her sabbatical, such as it is, wasn't permanent. Somehow she must have found what she was looking for.

Like who?

Except for Hemmer's death, nobody has as yet left the show.
La'an left. Una left. Uhura has finished her cadet cruise. Hemmer departed. Chapel is a temporary civilian research assignment, albeit they have not stated how long she would be with the ship. I just wondered if they were rotating characters.

We literally seen her in season 2 photos.
Yeah I tend not to keep track of the buzz to avoid spoilers. It's possible they gave some characters an out just in case they didn't hit the mark. If they are all back, I guess they all did.

It's episodic television. The seasons always end with the characters seemingly going their separate ways or in a situation where it seems they won't be back, then in the new season they all reunite.
Indeed, even though Hemmer won't be back, the actor is returning to play his replacement character.

Probably not. Back to episodic style where everyone comes back together.

I mean, I guess we could see flashbacks to Kirk's time on Tarsus IV when he appears in S2. But I don't really see the way to bring Kodos in during the present that wouldn't make "The Conscience of the King" kind of redundant as a story.

No I did not mean to suggest bringing Kodos to the present....

Kirk would have been a teenager during the Kodos time on Tarsus IV, if memory serves me. I don't see a reason for it to be hashed out here. And honestly, there's not a lot we need to see, except maybe where he spent time as an XO, since he was probably one of, if not the youngest, captains in the fleet. And to get the Enterprise as his command... clearly he did some great stuff in his career, stuff we have not seen. (Or perhaps "A Quality of Mercy" is essentially how it happened.)

As much as I like M'Benga and feel for what he's gone through, we should eventually get Dr. Boyce for the simple fact he seemed to have a close friendship with Pike in the original pilot. I'd like to see that explored, because that scene in his quarters when Boyce says bartenders and doctors see the exact same types of people, "the living... and the dying", was a great scene.

Regarding Chapel and Uhura, we really didn't know much at all about them except for a few vague references and pieced together information. I find it a nice tribute that they are both here, since Majel Barrett died years ago and Nichelle Nichols recently.

Plus, both actresses have been doing great in their respective roles.

I would like to see some of the backstory further explored. One thing I really don't like about vintage tv is they would drop a bombshell about a character's backstory, never mention it again, and then drop another bombshell in another episode, and never mention that again either.

They figured we were not paying that close attention. They would have laughed if someone had told them we'd still be talking about Kodos or the cloud creature over fifty years later.

We really need to see Kirk visit a therapist for all the shit he's been through.

That happens between episodes. See, in Star Trek you're supposed to be a full on stereotypical Stoic (*covers the eyes of his Marcus Aurelius bust*), never flinch in the face of danger, never react when bad things happen, but stay the course without so much of a whimper or tear. If you discuss feelings then you are weak and not worthy of Starfleet. That is how captains of old did it, right?

*Tongue in cheek, less anyone take me seriously.
