Well, first of all: I love Simon Pegg!
Second:
Everything speaks against him writing the new movie being a success: They have a tight deadline, apparently the script is crap (otherwise Paramount wouldn't have fired Bob Orci from the directors AND the writers chair). They have a new director (who, to his credit, got the tone of the Fast & Furious - franchise right, so maybe he can get the tone of another franchise right). But there is literally no time left to completely write a new script or visualize a new movie, they
HAVE to work with what has already been done to this point and just
re-work it to deliver the anniversary date.
And even though I love Simon Pegg as a writer, I think he really only shines when he's writing together with Edgar Wright (spaced, the cornetto trilogy). Everything he has done without Edgar is kind of
dull. It has a few neat ideas, but no coherent view of the whole picture. I think it's usually Edgar Wright who comes up with a whole new vision and Simon Pegg who fills it with some funny ideas. Let's hope Justin Lin and the other writer have a coherent idea for the film, so that Pegg can shine bringing life to it.
And finally:
I still think this movie will be great.
Why?
Well,
because:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (bad)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (good)
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (bad)
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (good)
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (bad)
Star Trek VI: The undiscovered country (good)
Star Trek: Generations (bad)
Star Trek: First Contact (good)
Star Trek: Insurrection (bad)
Galaxy Quest (good)
Star Trek: Nemesis (bad)
Star Trek (good)
Star Trek into Darkness (bad)
Star Trek 2016 (HAS to be good!)
