'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XI

Boy, these ladies sure don't get tired of looking for shit everywhere...

Like any good, self-proclaimed geek, I went out to see the new Star Trek movie this past weekend. It was very enjoyable. The writers put in plenty of tributes to the original series ("I'm a doctor, not a physicist!" lol) as well as some witty lines. The special effects were awesome without being overdone, and the storyline was easy to follow even if you were never a Trekkie.
Also, there weren't *that* many plot holes. I always expect a few plot holes here and there in a movie, but get frustrated when there is one every five minutes. That didn't happen here. Good job, J. J. Abrams.
However, there is one subject that I take issue with. And that is the characterization of Uhura. As many may know, Uhura is famous for being a black woman on the original Star Trek, played by Nichelle Nichols, and also for sharing one of the first interracial kisses with Captain Kirk on tv.
*****SPOILER ALERT!!!!!******
What I don't like about the portrayal of Uhura in the recent Star Trek movie:
1. Uhura can't fight physically.
In the 2009 Star Trek movie, Uhura is cast as an intelligent woman and skilled linguist who adds talent to the crew. She is also cast as a sex pot in a tight skirt!
The first time we meet her in the movie is when Kirk starts hitting on her in the bar and then gets in a fight over her with other space cadets. While the fight is going on, Uhura stands by helplessly in her mini-skirt and her boots, whining, "Stop it, guys. Stop it! Stop it now!" Keep in mind that she's a member of *Starfleet*, which is basically the army.
2. Uhura has an underwear scene.
Then the writers give her an underwear scene. Yup, that's right, the sexy linguist in her underwear. Don't worry, don't be frightened by her awesome language skills, you can see her in her hot underwear, too, and remember that she's just some hot girl that all the cool guys want. *sarcasm*
Really, Abrams? Really, was the underwear scene necessary? I don't think so. I think Kirk could have found out about her Klingon decoding in some other way.

I did not know Star Trek 12 was out yet? May want to fix your title. :)

I'm all for feminist criticism of the film. I agree more with the second commenter on her page, though.

Boy, these ladies sure don't get tired of looking for shit everywhere.

If this matters to you, you don't have to expend enough energy "looking for shit" to get tired (of the looking). It's right there in front of you.

Saldana certainly carried off the underwear look more successfully than Pine did. Skinny boy.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

I think the commenter might have a valid point. She needs show me her rack for me to be sure though.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

The underwear scene was gratuitous, no doubt about it.

As for the impact the portrayal has had on the character of Uhura, one need look no further than Dennis' avatar.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

I think the easiest way to even things up is to have Spock and Mc Coy in their underwear for the sequel.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

I'm a "lady" and I couldn't agree with her more. Uhura is finally given a more prominent role and sadly that role involves kissing and stripping.
It's all business on the Enterprise for me...I don't want to see the days of our lives on the got damn ship. I'm glad that there wasn't too much of it in nuTrek or else I think I would have a very different opinion of the movie.

I'd like this plot "element" ...IMO filler... removed for future installments...thank you.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

What can you do?

Men and Women are like 2 different species entirely when it comes to motivations and what goes on inside their respective brains.

Abrams gave men what they want. Personally, I would love to see what an Orion SLAVE girl (as they were originally portrayed in the 60's!) looks like wearing nothing at all, but this is Star Trek, not Stud Trek. I wonder if that Eddy Murphy joke is true.

As for the chix point of view, I have no idea - did they get turned on by Spock doing his duty? Do they like Kirk being the Bad Boy and starting a fight in a bar with guys bigger than him and only losing due to superior numbers? Maybe Uhura was only asking them to stop the fight because she thought it was required of her, but she wanted to see the fight go on? Isn't it a turn on for chix to see men fight over HER, and then SHE has the final word in accepting or rejecting the winner???

Seems to me this version of Uhura has alot more power over Kirk instead of the other way around. Let's remember that in that afore-mentioned "first 'interracial' (what, one of them wasn't a HUMAN?) kiss" Uhura was whispering about how she was thinking about taking courage from Kirk whenever there was danger on the bridge...

In the end, only chix can say how they feel about their portrayal in movies. I think only chix should write their responses and motivations in the scripts. I've read female written, female dominated stories - they are absolutely horrible for me. What good is it if men-centered "Iliad" adventures are the other way around for them???

All in all, if you're gonna give men the underwear scene, give chix a buff Capt. Kirk like they did in the 60's.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Where are the complaints about Kirk's mini-chub with the Orion girl?

Good grief what nonsense. This puritanical streak is alive and well in the 21st century. At least in the U.S.

And her underwear looked like Soviet-issue Victor's Secret from the 60's, for crying out loud.

Unbelievable.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Uhura shaves her armpits?! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Well, boys will be boys. When everyone in the writing room and the producers' offices are (mostly young) guys, this is what you get - whether it's T'Pol and Trip rubbing one another down or Intendent Kira tongue-wrestling with every hot chick in the galaxy...

Sex sells for men and women. Women just typically don't want to admit. (because soaps are watched only by men, millions of them, all the time...)

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

This argument might actually carry some weight if there wasn't far more eye candy for the women in this movie. They made McCoy and Pike handsome men (when they weren't in the tv show--- at least The Menagerie's radiated Pike). It helps that the two leads are both gorgeous, too.
