Shutting These Ridiculous Speculations (Dexter)

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Let’s eliminate these annoying speculations for the finale one by one.

  • Rita leaves Dexter for Elliot: by the way Rita has been working on her relationship with Dexter in the past two episodes and Elliot’s absence at the house, that doesn’t seem likely.
  • Rita divorces Dexter: same reason.
  • Trinity turns out to one of Paul’s parents: it was mentioned that the parents may take Cody and Astor to Disneyland which implies that the parents are living in Florida or at least outside of Miami. If that isn’t enough, we would have seen Cody and Astor in the Mitchells’ home in the finale clip and for those saying that he may have another wife on the side, I don’t see him living in both Miami and Florida at the same time.
  • Trinity turns out to be Dexter’s father or a long-lost relative of Dexter's: we’ve already been down that family road in Season 1.
  • Dexter lets Trinity go because he offers him a place as his partner in his killings: since the Thanksgiving episode, Dexter has clearly shut down all interest in Trinity seeing that he isn’t the role model he fooled himself into believing he was.
  • Dexter lets Trinity go because he is holding Cody hostage: how would Trinity find out about Cody’s location, get to it, and hold him as a hostage in the span of time the episode covers?
  • Dexter kills himself or dies by the end of the season: the show is renewed for a fifth season so I don’t see the show continuing after the death of the main character it is named after.
  • Deb dies by the end of the season: She’s an important part of the show and one of Dexter’s key relationships so I don’t them sacrificing that any time soon.
  • Dexter goes on the run or underground by the end of the season and Season 5 focuses on his run from the law: I think the writers are smart enough not to repeat the mistake of Weeds as it goes from taking in place a quiet suburban town in California to some place in Mexico.
  • Dexter takes out of himself out of his family’s life for their own good: though Dexter may have his doubts about being the right father and husband to his family, regardless he has shown great affection for them and once expressed that he can’t imagine his life without them. The Thanksgiving episode convinced him that he is nothing like Trinity who’s an abusive father with a pedophile crush on his daughter. Dexter may not perfect but, unlike Trinity, he knows he has flaws and actually works on them the best he can.
  • Deb finds out everything about Dexter and his killer ways: I don’t think the episode has enough time for Deb to find out all of Dexter’s secrets especially his big, dark secret.
  • Trinity gets get away by the end of the episode: I heard they don't plan on having the Trinity killer returning as a guest star down the line so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last episode of Arthur Mitchell.
Now these speculations have more of a certainty of happening

1. Arthur gets injected with Dexter's needle but something goes wrong allowing Arthur to wake up and run away from Dexter at the last minute. This may be the reason the finale is titled "The Getaway."
2. Arthur kills Rita.
3. Rita kills Arthur.
4. Deb uncovers the connection between Dexter and Brian and the shredded photo of Laura Moser in Dexter’s drawer.
5. LaGuerta and Baptista regretting their decision to get married.
6. Elliot getting killed.

I'll be back on Monday to read this thread more fully but I agree that the speculations you find absurd are not likely to happen.

Going into this 100% unspoiled, I think these are likely:

Rita is murdered by Arthur.
Dexter kills Arthur.
Deb sees Dexter kill Arthur, and retrospectively thinks it was revenge for Rita's death (which Dexter did not know about at the time).
Dexter is arrested for Rita's murder.
Deb keeps quiet about Dexter's murder of Arthur, perhaps even disposes of evidence and next season works tirelessly for his acquittal.
Deb figures out some, but not all, of Dexter's backstory. Maybe just the Laura-Brian Moser connection.
The final scene is either Dexter being arrested for Rita's murder or, following right after that, Deb rooting frantically through Dexter's office to find exculpatory evidence and stumbling across that partially shredded photo of Laura Moser, who she already knows is Brian's mother - YIKES!

Wild card possibility: Rita isn't killed. Dexter is arrested for the murder of that photographer who turned out to be innocent!

Lastly, thank gort I had the hunch this would be amazing season that I didn't want to wait till August to see on DVD, and caved in and got Showtime. :rommie: Whatever happens Sunday, the spoilers will be unavoidable for that length of time. Phew!

Temis: Be warned. I wouldn't rely on every spoiler you've come across if I was you. The woman played Christine on Dexter talked about how the cast and crew were given a script on the finale which they read for a bit thinking it was actually the script for the finale. But then that script was switched with the real finale script which was given to the cast and crew in portions. It was also mentioned that the creators of the show did some disinformation by releasing decoy scripts on the finale to distract people. So some of the things the cast said about the finale may be true while the rest may be disinformation to fool us into thinking the ending one way while actually it's other. Like when Battlestar Galactica was approaching its final episodes, Edward James Olmos and the guy who playted Helo said the ending of the show was going to be grim and everybody dies but when the finale was finally aired, it turns out the ending was the opposite.

Dexter has been great this season, I've been watching every week with great anticipation.

I'm not sure of the details, But I think the most likely scenario is Rita being killed, possibly even one of the children. Arthur is dead as well, and Deb will uncover that Dexter was Brian's brother/laura's son, perhaps even witnessing Dexter kill arthur

Batista is screwed, he's been screwed for four seasons, and that isn't going to change:lol:

Why don't we just wait until the show airs in like an hour.

However I think it's clear that Dexter gets blamed for at least someone's death. With how he set things up he might be called a copy cat killer or something.

Who knows, once again there is just a little longer to wait and I can wait.

Possible Spoilers ahead...

Holy shit, the OP called it. I wasn't expecting that ending at all at the point that it happened. I was thinking the credits were about to roll, everything wrapped up nice and neat. Wow. I can't wait to see how they deal with this next season. How will he explain his way out of this one? Will he just dispose of the body and act like he doesn't know where she is, like she just went missing? Deb is going to suspect something's going on. There's no real explanation for him having been at Trinity's house. I'm surprised anyone there bought it. I mean, he was already inside before the SWAT team even got there? It makes no sense from their point of view. They've laid the groundwork for Deb finding out about the "Dark Passenger." Even so, I think next season will have a subplot of her getting more and more suspicious, with the revelation of Dexter's true identity the season after that.

My impression was that next season is the last. Am I off-base on that?
I don't know. I hadn't heard anything like that. It would be a shame. It could be consistently good for several more seasons, as far as I'm concerned, before it starts to overstay its welcome.

The series was renewed for two more seasons after the third year. It may go longer, but I hope that the fifth year is the last. The concept can't sustain itself forever.

Temis: Be warned. I wouldn't rely on every spoiler you've come across if I was you.
I didn't read any spoilers! I broke my longstanding cheapskate habit of not subscribing to Showtime because I'm sick of reading Dexter spoilers in dribs and drabs while waiting for the DVD release in August. (And I'm glad I'm did, because the spoilers for finale will be unavoidable for that length of time.)

But the way the clues were shaping up - Paul's parents suddenly brought in to conveniently take Astor and Cody off Dexter's hands - the emphasis in recent episodes on Dexter and Rita's marital bliss - everything spelled curtains for Rita. Killing her ratchets Dexter's internal conflict up to the next level, which is exactly what this show needed at this point (especially if S5 is going to be the final season.)

Not sure how Dexter hitting the neighbor guy is going to factor into next season, if any. I wonder if the neighbor is going to start a campaign to prove that Dexter - who has a violent streak he tries to keep hidden - murdered Rita and tried to pass it off as a Trinity killing?

So I'm very sorry to see Rita go, and the whole final scene was hard to watch (poor Dexter!!!) but for the sake of the series, I have to say this is an excellent development. Now the Dark Passenger will have no restraint on it, which means a truly turbo-charged S5 as Dexter increasingly starts to lose control (while trying to be the single father of a baby!!!) Meanwhile, Deb will no doubt find the partially shredded photo of Laura Moser in Dexter's desk next season and if he was lying about that, what else is he hiding? Yet even if Deb discovers some nasty surprises, how can she do anything but take the side of her poor, bereaved brother?

S5 is going to be unbelievable. It's going to be a long eight months till Sept, groan. :rommie: Lost better step up with an incredible S6, or Dexter just may steal its title of Best TV Show of All Time.

Even so, I think next season will have a subplot of her getting more and more suspicious, with the revelation of Dexter's true identity the season after that.

My impression was that next season is the last. Am I off-base on that?

This finale sure feels like a show ramping up the conflict for the final season. But I suppose Deb could learn Dexter's secret in S5 and if it's handled right, there could be an S6 in which the conflict becomes, is she going to be able to keep that secret?

What if Deb knew but Dexter didn't know she knew?

I was really hoping for more, I figured at the least the way it ended would happen and really wanted more.
